I know some of the Asian squatters can be pretty awful, and you don't want to even think about where the stuff goes. I read a good story once about a toilet in Goa which -- so the story goes -- used to be open at the back of the box, and was cleaned out occasionally by a pig! But at least the user doesn't have to come in contact with the facility. In that way, I do think the squatters are more hygienic than the thrones.
My point above was that Americans (and other westerners, but especially Americans) seem to think these things are both horrifying  and hilarious. As in "Mommy, where's the potty? There's only this hole in the floor." Those contemplating working in the ROTW had better be prepared to adapt! |
On Jeju Island, in South Korea, they have a special, and very expensive delicacy. It is a specially fed pig. On human excrement. Truly. They promote it as one of the great aspects of the island. Korean couples always go to Jeju island on their honeymoons, and have the special meal, of course.

GROSS and GROSS!
Don't you know that pigs are symbol of impurity, rubbish recyclers, and eat almost all kind of rubbish including human and animal shit, dead rats, and carrion.
And the funny thing is that Pigs don�t get sick and they love wallowing in their own filth.
Do you eat rubbish?
Would you eat rubbbish?
I expect most people would say they do not eat rubbish, yet I say you are what you eat. |

Three points:
1. I wish people wouldn't feed the idiot troll 007, but that's not my call, I know.
2. The US is the only place I've been where highway rest-stop toilets are clean. Even in some Deliverance-looking truck stop in Alabama they're clean. I know, coz I stopped at one.
3. The rest of the world does watch American TV. If you want TV, watch The Sopranos. It's not for nothing that the New York Times and all the other mainstream publications rate the Sopranos as the finest TV show ever produced. Let me put it this way: If you watch the 8 or 9 hours of The Godfather trilogy, and then watch 8 hours of Sopranos episodes, I promise unequivocally that you'll find the latter a far, far more satisfying experience. The depth of characterizations, the human subplots outside Mafia business that we can all relate to, the amazing acting...what a gem. |

The US highway rest-stop toilets are full of used condoms, drug needles, and empty Whisky bottles.

1. 007 is not a troll! He's a good kid. He's not always right but I give him a lot of credit for trying.
2.007 hit the nail on the head when it came to public highway toilets. I live in a nice section of town and the Lebenese owner of a Dunkin Donuts had to call the police because some drug addict OD in the bathroom!
3. I have been to some rest areas along major US routes and had a few ok experiences too. I guess it depends where you go......
