Hi All,
I've been trying to get to Spain for ages, got as close as Turkey, but had to come back to Aust for family reasons, but never say Die haha I'm going to try again, so!
When is the best time of year to get over there to look for work?
Also! I'm in my mid 40's, is age a big thing with employers? I have extensive business experience and have also worked with kids, so I'm hoping to find something in either of those categories.
Is there much difference in Madrid and Barcelona as far as social aspects go for a mature, though a tad crazy woman?
I'm sure you can all relate, I'm suffocating back in Australia, those itchy feet of mine are unbearable haha. Plus all the usual materialistic bullshit that goes with being back in suburbia, ewwww. Ive worked in Asia for ages and wouldn't mind a change! Have Eu passport. Also any other suggestions other than Spain, that would be fun and interesting would be appreciated. My kids have now flown the coup, so time to get back out and have some fun, see the world etc.
Sorry if this is all over the place, my laptop is being a pain today and I have to type quick before it freezes or turns off on me
Cheers and thanks in advance for your time if you decide to offer some advice. |

Now is actually the best time. You should go over and walk the Camino de Santiago. Fall is the best time for that.
You can brush up your Spanish and decide whether you want to teach in Madrid and Barcelona with the sort of people who like that or in Burgos or Leon where I would look.
The Camino is the best way to kill two months in Europe. You can stay in shelter for a donation usually while you learn about the miraculous rooster and stuff like that. |

What fantastic advise, thank you! I must admit I hadn't heard of it and had to google it haha. but wow! Leon and Burgos are also equally fantastic and again, I had no idea! Thank you so much, I will definitely be having a good think about doing that.

Madrid is a highly sociable place, and it's definitely easier to get a job here and you are likely to get better hours in better locations as a Spain newbie here in order to fund your social life.
Barcelona definitely looks better on paper (beach, better temperatures, arts scene, prettier architecture etc.) and maybe that's why so many people head off there, which of course means loads of competition for jobs.
Madrid has a nice unpretentious down-to-earth feeling about it and has dry air with loads of sunshine. It does get very cold in winter, but it's a dry cold which I can live with. It also has the advantage of being very central, meaning you can easily zip off to any corner of the peninsular more easily. Then again of course I would say that as I live here: "de Madrid al cielo" and all that... |

In Burgos, be sure to check out the monastery of Las Huelgas. The Mozarab art work in the cloisters were fantastic and gave a very good insight into what Spain must have been like before it was "rescued" by the reconquista.
Also check out the angels in the cloister at Sarria. They were totally babalicious having been painted by a modern artist from Madrid recently.
Finally, start from Roncesvalles and for get walking in from France unless you are part Mountain goat. |

Thanks for that, I haven't heard it explained quite that way, but that makes sense! I'd prefer to be in a down to earth environment and the location makes sense too. I was thinking about the ocean and the fact that Madrid is so far from any Ocean, I don't think I've lived anywhere that far from an ocean before haha I have an internet business as well that I can do from anywhere, but its not regular income, so be good to even find a part time job, so I have rent money and social funds haha.
Thanks so much |
