| A dead end is what you make of it. I worked for one of the eikawa for a year and although it has its stresses, which are well publicized here and elsewhere I enjoyed being in a big city in Japan. I come from a big city in Canada and its still totally and completely different. The students are different and so is life in general in Japan. I wouldn't let the stories scare you away, you can come and see for yourself. I'm not suggesting that anyone break their contracts or anything, but if you decide to come over and you don't like where you are working , management, work conditions, etc, you will find that the job opportunities go up about 10X once you're actually on Japanese soil as opposed to ones you can get from overseas. That was just my experience anyways. |

| After a year teaching at an eikaiwa, I got a position in HR. There was no pay raise, and another HR person confided that the foreigners who worked in the head office got the lowest raises. Those foreigners did it because it kept them out of the classes (although they knew they could be put back there at any time). I didn't stick around long. |

| Me, I work in a private JHS/SHS. It is a rewarding job, and I really enjoy teaching students who are (for the most part) motivated to learn. The pay is also good (close to 6 million a year)- not fantastic, but good considering my work load. I teach 14 classes a week, plus supervise a couple of study periods and help out 2 afternoons with a sports team. My classroom is my own and is totally wired- dvd player, stereo system, projector and screen, wireless LAN connection, air conditioned, etc. |
Nagoyaguy, what qualifications do you have? |

Symphany, you may have missed the point of the original poster's question. Few would disagree with you that life is what you make of it, but AEON2007 is interested in knowing about CAREER oportunities, not job opportunities.
I think AEON'07 (if s/he doesn't mind me being familiar) is getting the picture that the general EFL industry is very flat in Japan. |

I think that holds for much of EFL teaching. Not only in Japan! |

Billy, first of all, what I said is a dead end is what you make of it. Does a career not start with a job? The impression I got, based on the OPs actual words

| I'd want to live in Japan for a while anyway but it'd be nice to know what the chances are of building a career there or maybe in other countries. |
show that the OP might want to start somewhere , the somewhere being Japan, and possibly change jobs or even countries if he or she doesn't get what s/he wants on the first try. I was merely letting the OP know that there are plenty of opportunities out there, a few from outside, but many more inside Japan itself. As with any other field that a person gets experience in, the insight gained from actually doing is something you can't get from standing and watching on the sidelines. |
