I notice that 007 is strangely silent on this most difficult of theological questions.

If God is just and benevolent, why does he permit the innocent to suffer ?

Come 007, share with us the teachings of Hussein Al-Banna on this point.

I understand from your question that God is unjust! Which I think is miss-leading, at least, for the un-believers.

As in the Bible, the Koranic God is just, merciful, kind, and most-powerful. And to understand the question of human suffering and its relation to God, you need to have a strong faith, understanding of affliction, and the context in which the human being is suffering.
In other word, and according to Islamic teaching, suffering is construed as a test of one's faith.

Some divine will does not necessarily lend itself to human understanding.
And to clarify the question of divine will, I give an example from an Islamic scholar in explaining the question of suffering and divine will, he says ""Let us imagine a child and an adult in Heaven. The adult has a higher place and the child asks God, 'Why did you give that man a higher place than you gave me?' And God replies, 'Because of all the good deeds that man performed in his longer life.' The child gets indignant and asks, 'Then why didn't you let me live longer so that I, too, could accumulate more good deeds?' And God replies, 'Because I knew that you would grow up to be a sinner, so I made you die early as a child.'" Thereupon, says this scholar, a cry will rise up from the depths of Hell, and from all of its sinners in the flames: 'Oh, Lord, why didn't you slay all of us and make all of us die before we became sinners?'
So, from an Islamic teaching, we are required to accept and submit to the Devine will, which is submission, and obedience (this is the meaning of the term Islam).
Also, I think, some kind of suffering is a test and punishment in the same time because of human sins! (this is my interpretation).

The above explanation is the teaching of Islam and not Hasan Al-Banna.

All gods have a wicked sense of humour. They play tricks on each other all the time, sending each other an earthquake or two or maybe a thunderbolt then they film the results and post them on the celestial internet. Of course, it's easy for them to forget that humans are more frail than their immortal selves

I do not think this world has more than one God.
Because if the world has several Gods, than it will be in a chaotic state, and each God will have its own rules and commandments, and this will lead to a conflict of 'interests' and the world will not function properly.
Imagine a country has two presidents in the same time! Do you think this country will function properly? I do not think so. The same applies with this world and the existence of one God (uniqueness).

Van Norden is raising the question of how we can reconcile the existence of evil and suffereing in the world with a benevolent God. I am not sure that I can help on that front.

The problem is not how we can reconcile the existence of evil and suffering in the world with a benevolent God.
The problem is how to rescue human kind from the 'tricks' and 'traps' of Satan (Devil).
Sure that the suffering in the world is not caused by God, but human beings themselves (directly and indirectly).

If you are a true Christain (or a Muslim), you should know that because of the mistake of our father Adam and mother Eve, when they ate that apple from the sacred tree (because of Satan lie), we are know living in this planet and suffering all kind of problems.

Can we understand why a benevolent Almighty created Evil, pain and suffering ?

He tests the innocent by making them suffer ?
