What is the worst hotel you have stayed in (in Turkey)? Turkish hotels on the whole are not up to much and I spent an hour dragging 80 kilos of luggage around Izmir (okay my husband was dragging most of it) before I found a hotel that was basically clean and didn't smell.

However, my worst hotel nomination goes to the Maltepe Otel, Istanbul. A tiny room with no air con and small window. Painted the most ghastly colours imaginable. The bathroom was minute and had no working light. The shower worked but the toilet had no seat and had not been cleaned. No cupboard for clothes. Smelly corridors too. The bed made me itch and I had to cover it with my own clothing before I slept.

The worst was that the bidet would turn itself on for no reason and with great force. I came back once heard a terrible noise, opened the door and the bidet was spurting everywhere all over the walls, my toothbrush etc (as the water hits the toilet before it spurts and the toilet had never seen bleach very unhygenic). I told the receptionist who spoke no English and was not interested anyway. I cleaned up with my wipes as best I could but two days later it happened again.

The last straw was my mosquito screen mysteriously disappearing which meant someone had accessed my room. I checked out in the night.

If you are ever offered a job at a school that offers to put you up at this hotel until you find a flat politely tell them you will sleep on the beach. Believe me it will be nicer!

BTW I have backpacked in Greece, Jordan, India and various other countries but this is the worst hotel I have stayed in.

Out of interest can you remember how much you paid for the room and when you stayed there ?
I think in all fairness we have at some time or another ended in accomodation that was less than we expected , usually the price of these places reflects the standard ,I think it makes good practise to check a room out carefully before you hand over any hard earned ,test the toilet ,does it flush ,is there hot water , run a tap ,sit on the bed , check for wildlife look for dust ,does the room smell fresh or stale ? You know stuff like that esp if you intend to stay a few nights never accept the first room they show you its usually the worst if you take it then you are the mug ,the ones on the next floor may be better ,take a look and if it all looks like a dog kennel then head for the beach !
I think a better thread would have been about restaurants ,I've got loads of those !
