A friend and her husband are going to Dubai in November to look at job prospects. They are looking to stay in a place where there is good public transport to go into the city. She found accomodation for 2050AED (for 2 people) for six nights. Is this the going rate or are there places that are cheaper, but decent?

While technically there is public transport in Dubai, there are always complaints about buses being full and passing by the stops, ladies not allowed on board because there are no ladies' seats available, failure to keep to the schedule. If you are accustomed to travelling on buses in the subcontinent, then you may be OK. If you're expecting North American or European standards then you'll be disappointed.

Yes. The buses are basically unusable. Forget about public transport inthe UAE, except for taxis. A typical taxi ride in Dubai would be about $5 to $6.

As for accommodation, I've been using www.asiarooms.com for both East Asia and the UAE for some time now and find them to be the best and cheapest overall. The rate you have mentioned would be about right for a three-star hotel in Dubai, but you can find cheaper. A problem with the majority of 3-star establishments in Dubai is that they have noisy discos all night and a lot of visiting hookers.

The rate you have mentioned comes out to $93 a night. You can get the Ramada Continental, nice place 5 mins. from tthe airport, for $107 if you go through asiarooms.com. But have your friends go through that website themselves.

Also check out the Arabian Park Hotel - <www.arabianparkhotel.com>. It's a modern, 3-star hotel - very nice indeed - just has small rooms.

...even though I'm finally leaving the Middle East...so maybe it's a moot point...but you never know.

What I like about the $15,000 suite is if I check in late and have to get up in eight hours for a rousing series of meetings all day with Henry Kissinger and save-the-children Angelina, I'm paying $1875 an hour just to sleep. It damn well better be a comfy bed.
