Hey all,
I've just arrived in Mexico City, and am going to begin the pavement-pounding...I have a few leads already, but am wondering if there are places I should really try to get into, places I should really avoid...
One possibility is a school called Anglo-Americano...has anyone heard of it?
It also seems to me that the majority of jobs out there are for business English classes...is this the case? I've been told they generally pay better.
Speaking of business English, I have a TESOL, but during the training we didn't really get into business English. I have about a year's worth of experience in the business world, so I think I can manage...I'm wondering, though, just how different the content would be for business English classes. I know this sounds snobby, but I frankly think that a lot of the English that I heard in my office days was fairly bad, ie, bloated or just plain incomprehensible...How do you balance preparing students for actual use (however awkward or contorted that might be), and teaching them clear, effective communication in English?
Phew....sorry for the scattered post...still intoxicated by being in Mexico City! I hope there will be another get-together soon! |

They are a good school...most often dealing in business English sending you out to companies. You may have issues getting them to sponsor you for an FM3 though. Do ask about it.

If the choice be between business English at companies or teaching at a language school, then yes, the pay is better. Be sure to watch your travel time. For example, classes out in Santa Fe...very common to get business English classes out there, but it'll likely take you 60-90 minutes travel time each way. You should try to stay in the city for classes. Don't be afraid to bring it up in job interviews.
You're likely to be handed a business English program to use, such as Market Leader or Business Objectives. The titles are identical in methodology to what you would (probably) have studied in a TESOL course. PPP or Task-based approach, so you can treat it the same way, though obviously, everything stands in a general business context. Anything industry specific you are unlikely to know, so you get the students to bring that to the table, while you concern yourself with shaping activities for the student(s).
The next get together should be coming soon...Sept 20 or so I think.

Wall Street Institute is usually hiring teachers. The main office is located in Zona Rosa. Take the metro to...Insurgentes, I think. They are located at 172-D Hamburgo Col. Juarez, Zona Rosa. Tel. 5005-0900
They are an easy place to work at for a first timer. They pay a salary of $6,200 pesos per month. They have two schedules: Mornings 7or 8am to 12 or 1pm. An afternoon shift: 4-9pm. Every other Saturday. 8am to 2pm.
Training only takes about a week. They will pay for the FM-3 and do all the paperwork. Doesn't matter if you have a degree.
Good thing is you get paid the amount every month. Even if you don't work all those hours. Example: You go in at 4pm. there is no class. You help the service manager with some paperwork for 20 minutes. At 5pm you have a student. Same at 6pm. Then a "social activity" at 7pm. It's a more open kind of class aimed at conversation. 8pm no students. 9pm go home. At many schools you wouldn't get paid those two hours you didn't work. At Wall Street you do.
It's a good place for a beginner. Also they take a very small amount of taxes out of your pay. You will get about $6,000 pesos per month take home. Very low stress. You don't have to do a lot of lesson planning. |

I hope that some of these classes you're being asked to teach are not in faraway Santa Fe and are a reasonable commute from your neighborhood, which will soon be mine. |

I have been vacationing in D.F. for about 10 years now. I've been teaching at a language school for immigrants and foreign students in NYC for about 2 1/2 years now. I'd really like to move down to D.F. permanently in the near future. I'm interested in anything you guys can suggest how to do that or if it is even possible. |

Hey everyone in D.F. Moved here Jan. 2 from Seattle, WA. Going to do the TEFL at Teachers Latin America. My focus is on ESP: business and IT. Look forward to meeting people, making friends and sharing information. Guy says there will be another get together one of these days. Have found a nice apartment a few blocks from Reforma 222 near Insurgentes. My contact information, and local cell/address are on my website. Hasta. |

Well, let's start with ye old checklist...
You say permanently? You'll likely want to start in on the tourist visa then consider whether you apply for an independent FM3 or get one tied to your employer. So...
A job. What kind of a background do you have? I assume you'll start to work again in language schools, or possibly seek an elementary or secondary school job?
A place to stay. If you're renting, then when you come down, stay in a hotel for a bit and scout out some of the rentals. If you're thinking of relocating by buying a home, then you'll need a lawyer, a different type of visa, and a lot of patience.
How about telling us a bit about you?

MO39 has the ball. She'd like a jazz club in Cuauhtemoc, near the US embassy, sometime this month. |

I've never been any good at all at sports, even "catch", but I think I can handle this metaphoric ball Guy has just tossed my way. I am really, really looking forward to my return to the D.F. this Saturday, so any weekend after this coming one would be great for a visit to my neighborhood jazz club. |

Throw us a date and a description and that should help to get the ball moving! |

After being away for a month, the name of the club has been temporarily erased from my memory banks. Once I'm back in my apartment, I'll check Tiempo Libre for the name of the club (and cost of admission) and propose a day for a visit. |
