I'm at my wits end with the secondary girls that I teach. Generally, all teachers have acknowledged that they're "pampered", I know I won't be coming back next year, but anyone have any tips that I can use now so that I don't go crazy?
I've got the bathroom thing under control, they're only allowed to go once a quarter, but as for talking and talking back, I don't know what to do. |

| I usually find drill sargeant pace and some kind of threat gets a little work out of rowdy classes. Do you have the power to throw them out? At least one, just to show the others that you'll do it. |

NO ,however after three warnings they get a note home. After something REALLY bad, they get a note home after the first warning. |

It must be in the nature of S. American girls. Give me an a class of Chinese, Korean or Japanese girls any day. They'll work hard and show measurable improvement in their language development, as well as appreciation of your efforts.
Not to mention, cf boys, they'll stay awake, because they haven't spent all night "playing computer" or onanising. |

| Right in China I was asked by the students for more homework. Maybe it's just teaching in rich schools. |

Ummm... they're teenaged girls! Not to be too graphic here but I'm sure a lot of them are just beginning their menstrual cycles... Girls need to go to the bathroom and teachers need to let them go! I spent the last year working in a junior high and I know the bathroom thing can be grating sometimes, but I strongly believe that it is not a teacher's place to prevent students from using the bathroom. |

| I don't get the bathroom thing. At the uni where I teach, students will wait for me to get to the classroom and then ask me if they can go to the bathroom. Why don't they go before? They pass the bathrooms on the way to the class. Do they not go if they don't have permission? |

Me too! (Although I'm not sure the uni students I've currently got qualify as "adults"!)
I remember way back when I was a receptionist in an office (saving money for my TEFL course), I basically had to get permission to use the bathroom. I couldn't go unless I could find someone to cover the phones for me. I decided that never again would I work at a job in which I could not use the restroom when I needed to without getting someone's OK. Having been in that position, I think I'd have a really hard time enforcing a strict restroom rule with my students. I think a one-student-at-a-time policy would be easily enforceable, though.

no, spoilt is the word. They change classes every 45-55 minutes and are allowed to go to the bathroom then. And they know that. They'd just rather go during class.
However, only letting them leave once every nine weeks does work.
Also, if they come late, I take that time off their test. So five girls were late on Friday. They have a 15 minute test on Monday, since they were ten minutes late, they only have five minutes to do the exam. |

| Why do you give tests then? I give tests to evaluate my students' knowledge level... so that both I and the students know where they stand in relation to the learning objectives. It seems to me that if you take 66% of the test time away from your students, their final scores will be almost meaningless and of no real use to them OR you. |

WEll, final scores are meaningless. I had countless grades changed last quarter by their tutors without my knowledge. Quizzes don't mean anything because they aren't related to numbers. An A is great, a B good. Buut what's an A? Some teachers have 50%, some 80%, there's no consistancy.
And if taking away test time is the only way that I can get them to acutally come to class, then I'll give it a try. |
