| Surveys show that young people tend to enact more equal values than the older generations. I think that the political system had a lot do in this sense. The PRI used to be a vertical institution and many people from the older generations didn't want to challenge it. Also, now people are more educated, travelled and with a better income, so they are more aware of their own living conditions and their world, so they are more confident with themselves. For instance, one night in a pub in London, I met 4 girls and one guy, all of them not older than 23, who were on holiday in Europe; they were from a small town in Jalisco (La Barca or El Grullo, I dont really remember), and they did not look or feel out place. They had been previously in LA. Considering that 10 million of Mexicans reside/work in the US, its not really unusual to find people, even in very poor towns, who had not been to the US. And of course, middle and upper classes go to Europe or more exotic destinations. And for those who cannot have this kind of exposure, internet and cable television represent a big sources of information. I was quite surprised when I read on the news that Televisa, the main producer of soap operas did not make money from the open television channels but from other services they provide. So this means, their audience is moving away from the traditional TV programmes such as soap operas and cheap productions. |
