Often true, but not always. It can depend on where you are, what you can do with your money, and what you can comfortably live without. When I was in Prague, my salary was something like a measly $300 or $400 per month, but on top of that I got free housing and good benefits, so it was all disposable income. And going out and traveling within the Czech Republic was very affordable, so I disposed of it quite well! Public transportation was cheap (we all got monthly metro passes--one of the benefits) and reliable. I enjoyed life with very little money. Went out all the time.
Where I am now (Oman), I do see more of a relationship between salary and enjoyment of life--particularly buying a car.

If you have a lot of money and no time, life may not be that enjoyable. |

A lot of people make their money on private teaching which could double your monthly income, but this can be dangerous.

I think this is true in every country, though not the dangerous part.
I was in Japan way back in 1996-7 when the economy was better, but even then the old timers were moaning about how it wasn't as good as it used to be. I got 250,000 yen a month for 25 hours a week of work. 4 days a week I did a one hour private lesson in the mornings and got 10,000 yen an hour! I could have easily done more privates at that rate, I turned down several, but my rent was 80,000 yen a month (shared with my X) so I paid our rent with those 4 hours a week. He paid all our food with his private classes. Our salaries just stacked up in our bank accounts. At the end of the year we took a train trip all around the north of Japan, which blew loads of our savings but was worth it. We each came back to the US (we separated at that time) with 10,000 US dollars.
Also here in Mexico, I was at a time doing a private class that met twice a week and making more than the cost of rent in a month. |

Earnings vs Quality of Life - I guess is often a balancing act.
I made lots of money in the ME, but disliked the culture and lifestyle - though it did feather my nest for future retirement. Then again, I saved almost as much money in Korea - with a much better lifestyle.
My home is in Thailand because I love the weather people food - but it is a lousy place to work for money. In fact, few countries pay less and expect more than this country.
The debate has to include your age and how prepared you are for your elder years. If you are still very young - go, have a good time, but do keep an occasional eye on the clock and don't forget to prepare financially somewhere along the line. |
