I'm not in my country at the moment, can I go to the embassy instead?

Thanks!

As far as I know Embassies don't have much to do with this sort of thing. Your best bet is to search the web for the Automobile Assoc in your country/ state (Sorry you didn't say which country you're from). I've found that in Queesnsland (Aust) you can get a new IDL by sending a photocopy of your (valid) licence and a couple of passport photos along with about $15 AUD to the RACQ and bob's your uncle. Of course it helps if you have a family member go in and do it for you, otherwise you have to sort out money orders for the IDL and stamps etc. You DO know that you can only use an IDL for your first 12mths in Japan regardless of the period the IDL is valid for?

Hey thanks for that.

I don't want to fly back to Australia to get the IDL. Can I get a family member to do this for me, or do I physically have to be there?

Thanks again!

You don't have to be there yourself.

I've had my family in Melbourne get me an International D/L before and it was very easy. All they need is a couple of passport photos and either your real Australian licence or I think even a copy of it is OK.
