Are there any English or French schools (kindergarden to primary) in: Musana, Nizwa, Ibra, Salalah, Shinas or Ibri
My husband got an offer to teach in Oman and we are thinking of relocating. The problem is this: the initial post is Muscat but he may have to move to one of the towns listed above. Any advice is much appreciated.

The short answer is no. There is an international school in Sohar I believe which is close to Shinas, otherwise, Muscat is the only good option.

I could be wrong but all of those towns are small and have no market for English or French schools.

Thank you for the reply. How far are these towns from Muscat? I tried to find a map of Oman but it was hard to see these little towns. Most have Indian schools but for Shinas & Musana, not even THOSE are available.

Try Wikimapia at www.wikimapia.org

Though the basic language is English, most of the tags in Oman (except those in Muscat) are in Arabic. However, it's got a feature for measuring distances and area.

You can post your own tag, too. You can also search for keywords like school, schools, kindergarten, etc.,

There are English language international schools in Muscat (numerous, and it's not that far from Musana), Sohar (70km from Shinas) and also in Salalah. That's probably about it though - I don't know about one in Nizwa (60-90 minutes out of Muscat by car if you put your foot down) and I'd be truly amazed if there was anything in Ibri. Not a lot of help, probably, but there you go.

Thank you everyone for your help. The information you send is very useful. Still daunting to think that we would have to drive up to 2 hours daily just to drop my son to school.

Still maybe the accomodation is somewhere half distance.

Or at least let us hope.

I think Nizwa is the closest to Muscat-150 km sound right to everyone? Not a commute-friendly drive to Muscat.

There is a large French school in Salalah based in the Hamdan / Al Wadi area.

There are two International Schools in the Al Batinah district: one in Sohar; and one closer to Shinaz, off the Al Batinah Road. Here are some details of the latter:-

Al-Batinah International School is a new school being developed by ISS and will begin operation in August of 2007. The school is being developed for Sohar Aluminum Company in a rapidly expanding development area in Oman. The school will open with grades K 8 for approximately 50 students with the intent that the school will expand to more than 100 students as more companies establish a base in this area. The school will open in a temporary facility with the construction of the permanent school to be completed prior to the start of the 2008 school year. Additional grade levels will be added each year until all grade levels K-12 are in place. Initially grade levels will be combined and teachers will be expected to help with activities outside of the classroom. ISS will be recruiting for these positions at the San Francisco and Boston recruiting fairs in February. Sohar is located on the Gulf of Oman approximately midway between the capital city of Oman, Muscat, and the city of Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Sohar is 200 km distant, about 2 hours by car, from Muscat; and slightly further from Dubai. Hope that helps...

Aliskander,

I could not get any information on the French school in Salalah. Do you happen to have a link or any contact details? I could not find anything on the web.

Thanks.
