I have been lurking, but haven't posted for a variety of reasons. The return to Canada has been a real mixed bag.
- My Mexican-born cat didn't survive the return to Canada. The first night I returned he ran out an open window into the forest. A neighbor found Basura's body a couple of weeks later.
- I've discovered the job market to be very poor for ESL work, but good for IT work. I found work almost immediately at a call center (low pay, and boring, unchallenging work) and have been slugging it out there while I search for a better job. I had four (4) job interviews last week and have at least one more scheduled this week, so I'm optimistic I'll find a better job soon.
- On the other hand, I haven't experienced any problems at all with reverse culture shock. I quite enjoy being back in Canada, and so far I don't really miss Mexico much. That might change in a couple of months when the snow starts to fly. |

| Thanks for checking in with us. I am so sorry to hear about your kitty. I know how much he meant to you so this is very sad news. I hope work turns around for you and if not, jump on the airplane and come on back to Mexico, your home away from home. |

| I'm sorry about Basura. It is always a sad day when a good Kitty dies. |

I'm sorry to hear about Basura too. I hope that short time it was there was a fine adventure in the Canadian wilds though...from a cat's point of view.
Are those jobs back home or in other parts of BC? Must be good to see family, eh? |

I think under these sad circumstances you should keep such an opinion to yourself. |

I agree with Samantha and here's how Basura got his name:

Uh oh. I found my cat when he was a kitten eating garbage in our apartment complex's bin.
Of course I named him Basura, which my students seem to think is hilarious.

LS,
I'm also very sorry to hear of Basura's passing. And hope that you do find a better job soon. Do keep popping in, even if you end up in IT rather than TEFL. |

Heh. Yeah, but it made the students laugh, and he certainly didn't seem to mind his name.
I received a job offer yesterday for decent pay running a help desk for a local software company, but I had a great interview today for another job. It's with a gov't agency doing computer support and training for disabled people. Good money and it's got good long term security. I have my fingers crossed for it. |

| Change, evolution. People come, stay, then move on, to other places in the world or in their own lives. Change is sad, but exciting, too, especially when it involves some unknowns. |

On Friday I returned home from my crappy call centre job to find I'd received a letter of offer from the government agency. It's full-time and pays $20/hour (about 2X what the call centre pays) plus benefits. Not bad at all - naturally I've accepted it! The new job starts September 24th, so I have only one more week in the call centre, thank God.
I should also mention that the job involves doing IT training in a classroom environment. My TEFL experience was the deciding factor over the other candidates in getting the job.
The sad thing is that in August I had a couple of job interviews for ESL work with the local university and a language school. I thought the interviews went great, but neither school has even bothered to call me or send a "too bad" email.
Ah well. |

That's great news! Congratulations! And you'll be teaching and doing 'good work' too, which must be a nice thing. I hope its all you want it to be.

Same thing happened to me when I went back to Oz briefly a few years ago. Then when they found they were shortstaffed they contacted me and expected me to be available to work at a moment's notice.
All the best of luck,
Lozwich. |
