In adition the comments regarding speaking more than one other language than English, and not having the option to vote for these in the poll, I can speak French and Dutch reasonably well in addition to Russian. I actually chose Russian as this ironically has proved the most useful other language in my travels.
Like Capergirl I'm a little surprised that French hasn't received more votes, especially with the large number of Canucks on this forum, (or maybe they didn't pay attention in class when learning it at school! ) |

Hi folks,
French, Spanish, German and Polish,
several others in varying degrees of ability but not too well.
I can say hello in a whole bunch of others.
What are the ten most useful phrases to learn in any language?
1) Where are the toilets?
2) My friend will pay.
3) One (beer) please.
4) Another (beer) please.
Please feel free to add more... |

Sitting in a bar on Cat Ba island eavesdropping on a group of backpackers. One of the older guys stated he learns 4 phrases in the language of whichever country he is in:
Hello
You are a very beautiful woman
Thank you very much
Goodbye.
Reckons he doesn't need any more! |

English and French, with smatterings of Spanish and Afrikaans/Flemish/Dutch (had an S. African boyfriend for 3 years so it kinda rubbed off). Am currently struggling with Turkish, which is proving to be my most mind bending experience with language yet. It feels like the opposite of English sometimes.... |

| Keep struggling with the Turkish. I remember going through the same. At first and for a while after it is a bit daunting as it is so different. However one day it will click and you'll suddenly think 'Ah now it makes sense. what a logical language' |

I was forced to study French for 4 years in high school. I've never had to use it - no one in western Canada speaks French.
If I'd had the choice then I'd have much rather studied Spanish - it would have proven a lot more useful to me in the long run. |

Okay, I'll 'fess up. Once upon a time, I could speak French (Cajun dialect). Unfortunately, I lost it when I was forced to move to an area where no one knew French. Besides, my father actively discouraged me from speaking it. I don't think he liked me knowing a language that he didn't--it made him wonder what I was up to.
I keep promising myself to try to get it back but I've kinda gotten distracted by Arabic. Someday, though...someday... |

Irish, I understand your father's point. My father and his siblings spoke French. They used it when they didn't want their parents and later their offspring to understand what was being said. |
