I just have a few questions about the PNET scheme.
I am looking to possibly apply and look for employment as a primary/elementary school teacher in Hong Kong. I already have completed a BA with a French major, sociology minor. As it stands, I will be completing my BEd in primary/elementary education as of August '08. I will be certified to teach in my home province upon completion.
My question is this: I know that I can apply if I have completed a degree but how will my BEd play into this situation? I will not have finished it (I will be in my last semester when the deadline comes up) when it comes time to apply. I will have just finished my 4 month internship at this point and would be heading into my final 6 courses until the first week in August. How would this affect my chances/pay rate if I were to be offered a job? |

You will be employed on the lowest level as you have no experience.
I'm not trying to put you off applying - do so by all means, as there is nothing lost by making an application, but without experience are you going to be able to take on the role of a PNET teacher?
Are you going to be able to lead PD sessions on reading, phonics and process writing etc?
You will be expected to be the 'expert' in teaching English even though the teachers are not necessarily going to be interested in learning anything from you! It can be a very frustrating experience. |

Well, I am not looking to go to make a lot of money and come home. I am looking to take some time off and live/teach abroad before settling into a teaching job here in Canada. I think I have the patience and the desire to want to do a good job and make it work. Everyone has to start their teaching experience somewhere, right?
I'm not really sure what the lowest level of pay is, though. What's the starting level I would expect? I know there is an allowance that I would be eligible for as well, so that would help. My main concern is if I will have the ability to survive on such a salary. |

Yes, but few if any reputably employers in the educational field in HK are willing or able to be that 'somewhere'.
And Ann makes a valid point regarding the Personal/Professional Development sessions. If the objectionable local Hong Kong Chinese grumpy old women salary-teachers scoff at and openly dismiss teachers with 20 or 30 thirty years post-qualification experience, how do you think they will react to a fresh of the boat newbie? You'd be laughed out of the classroom, if not the town. |
