Just thought I share this little experience.
I recently applied for a job at this college. After the initial rather enthusiastic reply from a certain Mr. Far, I emailed him a couple of times with a few questions regarding the job, contract and required paperwork. I didnt hear anything for a few days. A few times I tried to call the chap, but he was either out of the office, or his cell phone had such bad reception it was useless to talk. Then in late August he replied back with a more detailed job offer.
Well OK, I thought, but where is the contract, or the required papers so that I can get my Z-Visa prior to flying to China unknown?? I emailed him and asked for those papers, but didnt hear back until yesterday, when I got this reply from him:

Your application have been accepted. You can come in China with a tourist visa and we can fix the work visa in HongKong and Guagnzhou. Please advise me your traveling plan and I will arrange somebody to meet you at the airport. Far |
Still no contract, let alone the documents I need for my Z-visa application. So I wrote back, basically telling him that without a prior signed contract plus the Z-Visa stamped into my passport, there would be no way Id be coming over soon.
Last night I got an email from a lady who apparently is a teacher at said college. Here it is, I quote in parts:
Quote: |
I am a teacher at Peizheng, here for the second year. Your protest, in your letter to Mr. Far so frustrated him, that I offered to reply to you.
Whatever you read online or anywhere, we never send a signed contract to a teacher who is coming to Peizheng. We send them the same copy of the contract you were probably already sent. We do not even send a salary offer until we receive their application, as there is a formula to determine that, based on education, experience and where you have taught before and what you have taught.
There are presently 76 Foreign teachers here, including most from the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. All came with a tourist visa, and when they arrived, Mr. Far then took their passport, and changed their visas to the "Z" type, multiple entry visa we all teach under. We sign the contract, face to face, with our director after we arrive.
No one came here with a ready-signed contract, no one came here with a pre-issued "Z" visa.
....
I left the U.S. with a promise of a job, and a tourist 30-day visa, and have never had any trouble with receiving the proper paperwork. One school tried to hire me, but when I inquired about how many weeks I might have to wait for the proper visa, they replied that they would use another method to employ me as they didn't exactly have permission to hire a foreign teacher. I did not take their offer, though the money promised was much higher than the 3,500 RMB most schools in China pay their teachers.
This school pays more than twice that and has permission to hire 90 foreign teachers, though the complement is usually 80.
....
I hope you will again do your research, but actually read the teacher blogs on Dave's ESL site, which will tell of our more than adequate housing, our beautiful clean air campus, and the care the FAO gives us here.
....
The apartments are not spacious but furnished with the things we need, color TV, internet access, microwave, hot water in the shower, air conditioning, refrig. and washing machine, etc. They are not decorated in any specific style, so you can add your own imprint

Hmm, yes, research on this college made me check out this link:

In particular, the entry by poster 'BiancaT' dated Wed Jun 13, 2007 4:46 am (about half way down the page) in which she clearly shows her Guangdong Peizheng College contract with all relevant details. Granted, perhaps it's just some phantom contract BiancaT pulled out of thin air, then again, perhaps its the real thing; who knows for sure?! Fact is, it seems pretty real to me and there's no reason to believe otherwise. So much for the claim said college never hands out contracts
I also added, that simply put, I will not enter into any employment anywhere without a) a valid contract and b) all relevant and required papers in hand prior to heading off for destination "unknown".
Im constantly amazed by the apparent audaciousness of some Chinese recruiters. I mean, hell, unless Im real desperate, why would I even consider running the risk of possibly ending up having to work illegally, when this can be very easily avoided in the first instance?! Especially in China! Shiiiiiit, the idea of having to deal with Chinese Immigration Police officials doesn't bear thinking! In my mind this is a no-brainer: it's simply not worth the risk. Im not saying this is necessarily whats going to happen at Guangdong Peizheng College, but given that Im asked to go there without a contract or legal papers of any sort in hand, sets off a whole lot of alarm bells in my head.
Besides, any decent Chinese university/college or otherwise shouldn't even hesitate sending all required documents to an overseas applicant so that the required Z-visa can be procured. It's a fairly simple and painless procedure at least here in Thailand and as far as I know also in Australia (where I hail from). After all, if they cant even do this, what can I expect of them once there?
Fortunately there are other universities/colleges/recruiters out there that seem to operate with a bit more attention to legalities, realities and general common sense.
Guangdong Peizheng College might well turn out to be a nice enough place to work at, but given the circumstance this chap encountered, I guess Ill never really know. Never mind, its a big pond out there with a lot of fish ... |
