Does anyone have any advice on what to bring to wear in Taiwan? I'm told it seldom gets below 50 F but am not sure what to bring. I have a job lined up with Shane and will be leaving mid-October.

Do I need much in the way of winter clothes--gloves, hats, jackets with liners, etc.?

You can buy it all in Taiwan for very reasonable prices. It does get cold in the north in the winter, particularly in a scooter, which you undoubtedly will be.

In the south you don't really need all that stuffl.

You'll find it, but it won't always be the easiest thing to do. There are shops in every city that stock large sizes, but what bugs me is a that a lot of those shops think us big guys have no fashion sense, as they seem to stock only the ugliest clothes in big sizes.

I have to admit though, I do much of my clothing shopping at the Russian Market in Phnom Penh.

Believe it or not there are "big" Taiwanese too....i would bring your own jacket, and sweaters that you love, because riding around on the scooter during winter can be chilly....maybe a pair of gloves too....other than that you can find most anything that you'll need here...even a size 18 1/2 dress shirt if you need it! (but you may have to do some looking around)

Hard if your ffet are over british size 11 or XLL 6'3, bring a lot of T shirts, shirts, trousers if your waist is over 42".

There are a few Tall and mighty shops here, mainly in the larger towns. The most famopus ones are called big bird, a joke on small bird another word for *beep*.

Trust me, im 6'4, 19+ neck and 50 inch waist 56 inch chest, and my selection here or ENgland is small:)

So if you a large AMerican bring cloths for a hot summer, and a waterproof/windproof for you scotter in winter.

Hey guys,

Just a question about how cold it gets in Taipei...

Now, I'm a guy who isn't really affected by the cold very much, in fact, I'm thinking of not even brining a winter coat, and just bringing a leather jacket.

Would that be enough for the Taipei winter?

What's the coldest it normally gets in Taipei (I'll be there from at least December to March)?

Rain is the concern more than cold.
CHill factor of riding a bike/scotter.
And if your stand a moderate Autumn, then cold only really effects Taiwan for about a month, and even then it is not freezing. People actually die here of the cold, but they are few and sleep rough.

I wear a coat about once a year, a jumper maybe one month, rain proofs a lot

Then I guess that answers my question - I'll be fine with a leather jacket, especially considering the fact that I'll be using public transportation and not riding a scooter.

But I think I'll also bring a rainproof/resistant coat as well as it rains a lot.

Wow, that's interesting to hear.

I lived in Japan for several years and didn't really have a problem with my leather jacket getting damaged or ruined (unless one were to wear it during a typhoon, and then yeah, that thing is toast! haha) and I believe Japan is just as humid as Taiwan.

What do people wear in Taiwan if they can't wear a leather jacket? I love that thing...if I don't wear that, then a trenchcoat will have to do I suppose. Smile

If you cant find anything you like locally in Taiwan, what about buying stuff on Ebay? Are there any barriers or problems with doing that (besides shipping expenses)?

Going to bump this thread up a bit...

I guess the following answers my question as to whether or not I should bring my winter coat!

Just the other day I spoke with a Taiwanese American guy here in Los Angeles, who said he was in Taipei last Christmas and it wasn't any colder than LA (which doesn't get cold at all).

What has your guys' experience been like with Taipei weather in the winter? Any recommendations for me?
