For the Big 3, GEOS/NOVA/AEON can you stipulate that you only want a job in a certain city? I am currently in Japan working for a private English school. When my contract is up in July I want to move to a specific city. Would I be wasting my time applying to these schools?

I am returning to Japan in February to work for NOVA. NOVA asks you your preference, to include the size of the city in which you would like to live. However, there is no guarantee as placement is based on need. As for the others, I can only assume they would also allow for a wish list of locations but stop short of a guarantee.

If you go to their local (to your desired location) hiring office and fib a bit, telling them that you already live there, you'll probably have better luck. Though I guess they'd figure that out if you needed housing through them... My roommate was already living in Kyoto and picked up a job at Kyoto NOVA by going to Osaka, and had no problems. Had to trainin Osaka, but that was that.

Thanks. Since I am quite close to the city that I want to move to I will try and apply at their regional office if they have one there. If not, do you know if you have to sign the contract with these companies before you are certain where you will be placed, or can you go through the application process and decline if they cannot place you there. Again, your information has been most helpful.

Some of the Big 3's will ask you where would you like to be placed. You can specify Regions, Prefectures, City/Rural. Sometimes you might not get what you want.
They will usually tell you where the place is before you sign the contract. The Big 3's are usually are near the cities, because that's where the people are, or close to train lines.
If you go work for NOVA and go to their Multimedia center, you get placed in Osaka somewhere.
