How long is reasonable?

Two weeks....one month....six weeks....two months...

Anything over two months seems a bit excessive! Does it take that long to find a new teacher for a (in my case) part time teacher in Tokyo?

I also heard that it works against you if you give in too much notice...people in the office get a bit...silly...sometimes.

Is there a legal Japanese guideline in this area that I can point out to my employer?

Many thanks!

I gave my school about 7 weeks notice, and ended up staying a few weeks longer to train my replacement.

I was one of two teachers though, and really liked the school and people I worked with, so wanted to give them plenty of time.

It all depends on you. But, as the previous poster said, 2 weeks is fine, probably 4 weeks is normal.

I gave the eikaiwa I used to work for 10 weeks notice when I decided to quit, even though in the contract it said only 4 weeks were required. Then I heard from people in the local bar that my ex-boss (a regular there) had been bitching that I hadn`t given them enough, blah blah blah. Looking back I wish I'd taken it down to the wire. For reasons I won't dredge up (you've heard it all before) they deserved it.

1. Read your contract. It may actually have a clause about doing this.

If not, then

2. Give a month. If you give less then it's less than normal and because pay periods are per month, then it could screw with their business. If you give more, then be prepared to be treated like crap for a longer period of time. Some employers aren't nice people. They tend to get bitter and try to find out where you will work in the future and sink your new job.
