Hi,

I've been offered a job with the college above and was wondering if anyone knows anything of their reputation; any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Well, if they are recruting you to come over and teach for this school term, then it may say something about their organizational skills or to be exact, the lack of organizational skills. It could also mean the location is a bit undesirable and somebody had just pulled a runner.

I concur what tw says...

Also, I have lived and worked in Nanjing for the past four years. I am familiar with lots of colleges and universities -- and training schools here. The one you are inquiring about is unknown to me. Good luck, and be cautious.

Thanks, Anda!

Now I have amuch better idea what this job is about...

This is what is known as a "Foundation Program," which, in theory, is meant to prepare students for study abroad (in this case, Canada).

Before I continue, let me make it clear that I very much enjoy teaching students in China. It is the wonderful relationship I share with them (purely academic) that keeps me here.

However, I have had two previous teaching positions in Foundation Programs, and both of them (in two different cities) were TOTAL NIGHTMARES -- and complete rip-offs for FTs.

For additional detials, I urge you to read the discussion thread regarding Foundation Programs at Raoul's China Saloon:

I am not speaking against Nanjing College of Information technology directly, but I am speaking LOUDLY against Foundation Programs in general. I advise you to seek teaching employment elsewhere...

I was offered a Foundation position a few months back for a new University in Iraq. Later I found out all the teachers bolted due to a car bomb that went off near the teacher dorms. 1 teacher had cell-phone pictures on his website showing the explosion from the university windows.

Thus, they needed 10 teachers right away. Same telephone interview as yours except it was from Canada.

What joy, I'm glad I didn't accept it. Danger and possible mis-management doesn't sound like a good mixture.

Plus, the pay was on the low end for the ME too.

WOW!!!!

I think I can reasonably predict no car bombs will be detonated at or near Nanjing College of Information Technology! Lordy! The program might be bad (or not) but it will be safe!

Why would anyone venture to Iraq for teaching at this time???

The NCIT foundation programme is better than most in China. Examinations are marked to a higher standard than on most similar programmes, i.e. a fair proportion of students do fail despite the fact that they have paid fees. The students are not too smart, but then that's par for the course for Chinese kids from rich families.

If the BCIT mentioned in the job ad is the BC Institute of Technology, then it is definitely not some Mickey Mouse program. BCIT is a well-established and recognized public technical college in British Columbia with graduates not having to worry about being unemployed upon graduation.

Thanks for the replies, however it's not the same college as mentioned in the link above. I've been given a different web address for the college: www.njcit.edu.cn/col1/col12/index.php?colid=12 but all the information is in Chinese so I can't glean anything from it.

Wrong school; that's one college within the U of Aeronautics & Astronautics in Nanjing. They're a big recruiter of foreign teachers each year, though.

NCIT is way out in Xianling University City, so you'll be taking approximately 45-minute bus rides into the city. As the name implies, it's pretty much a bunch of universities & colleges peppering a whole lot of greenfield space and little else out there. Sorry, can't say anything about the workings of the school.
