What is the situation with Japan and spousal visas?
If I was to get a 'work visa' in Japan, would my spousal be allowed a spousal visa? Are spouses allowed to work on Spousal Visas? |

I am pretty sure that your spouse can get a spouse visa. My husband and I both have working visas now but next year my husband is going to go to Japanese School. Well the Japanese school told us that when we go to renew our visas, renew his as a spouse visa. So I am assuming that means that you can do it. Although there are some restrictions on a Spouse visa, I think you can only work 20 hours a week or something... |

your wife would get a dependent visa, if you had a work visa. People on a dependent visa can work up to 20 hours per week.
I have a spouse visa because my wife is Japanese. |

I was wondering where this is written on the Japanese immigration website (mofa). If it is in Japanese that would be even better. I know this is true, but I'd like to see it in writing as a friend is currently having immigration problems and immigration told him he couldn't work at all on a dependent visa.
Thanks |

You are 100% wrong, on many counts. Assuming the original poster and his/her significant other are not Japanese, a "spouse visa" is not possible.
You are 100% wrong again. Your husband would have to renew his visa as a "dependent visa" or a student visa.
A "spouse visa" is for people who are married to Japanese nationals. There are no limitations on the amount of hours you can work nor the type of job you wish to do. |

Calm down Jimmy!
That is what the school told us..maybe they dont know the rules. But in my (and their) defense there is not much difference in the two...
So Tiger, sorry for the confusion of words...but a dependent visa still means that your sig. other can come to Japan! |

Firstly, my name is not Jimmy. I find your tone and haphazard use of names offensive. Secondly, most reputable Japanese schools know the immigration rules about visas, especially the names and differences between the different types. Their target market is indeed foreigners. Using your words, "I am pretty sure" that you were mistaken or some miscommunication problems occurred.
Thirdly, I wanted to clear up some misinformation you presented to the original poster. Fourthly, there is a massive difference between a dependent visa and "spouse visa."
My original post was not meant to be offensive, nor an attack. However, I am very displeased at your inability to just say, "I was wrong." I pointed out the mistake. However, if you insist on name calling in the future, I will have no course of action but to report you to the moderators. |

Gordon, do you mean this?
www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/
Dependent visas are in the category of general visas.
So it states that work is not permitted. Strange. I heard that it was up to 20 hours a week. I think your friend she go to the immigration office. |

Thanks, yes, I couldn't find that either. My friend is afraid to go to immigration, that is why I am looking into it for him, but I need something in writing. |

Gordon, the spouse needs to fill out the "Permission to engage in an activity other than that permitted by the status of residence previously granted" form. It is described in English here:
http://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/13.html
and in Japanese here:
http://www.mofa.go.jp/mofaj/toko/visa/annai/visa_13.html
From my understanding, permission is almost always granted. |

Take it easy. If you are insulted by a little jab you haven't been here very long. Better get used to a lot more than that. |

Thanks for clearing it up, but I think in this case it won't be automatic. But you never know....
Do you know where it states how much a dependent can earn before starting to pay taxes? I heard 1.1 million/yr, but have never seen it written down before. |

So are you saying that if you are on a dependent visa you dont have to pay taxes unless you make over a certain amount? |

Dependent Visa.
My Filipina wife has an American passport (she lived in the U.S. for 9 years). However, she doesn't have a BA degree at this time, so I doubt if she could actually teach English in Japan without one, or could she?
But it would be a Dependent Visa. |
