I've been trying to find a map that shows where Nakamura-ku in Nagoya is, but I can't seem to find anything. I'm trying to find where it is on Google Earth so I can see where I'll be located. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I hear the internets is good for this sort of thing. Or maybe it's the inter-web. Whichever uses all those glass tubes:

Welcome to Nagoya,

http://www.city.nagoya.jp/global/en/nagoya00023973.html

That link shows the different wards in the area, including Nakamura Ward. It's quite humid here right now, be prepared to sweat for at least a couple more weeks.

A couple of good places to connect and have a beer, listen to music (and play as well if you're a musical sort) ...

Misfits in Imaike (Chikusa Ward)

http://www.misfits.ws/ Often has live music on Friday or Saturdays. It's Japan, so... very small space! That hasn't stopped a full band from playing and fans jumping all around.

Country Joe (Shin Sakae, Naka Ward)

Not just country - again, if you're a musician, you can set up a mic night for yourself (maybe not heavy metal though...)

Creek

Usually DJ's, very relaxed atmosphere, sofas and a great mural on the ceiling. Open late late late (as in all night on Fri/Sat). It's in Shin Sakae (around the corner from Country Joe).

Shin Sakae and Sakae are full of traditional Izakayas - just take a peek down the back roads and look for the red paper lanterns. Walk in, order a beer, and someone will strike up a conversation (certainly on a Friday night).

Subways close at midnight... Dance places stay open all night. Not much of a dance clubber myself, but ID Bar, MyBar and the Underground come to mind. Open 'til 5 or 6 am.

Hope this helps a bit. Have fun. The naysayers will have you believe Nagoya's no fun. It's what you make of it yourself, and judging from you're posts, you sound like a pretty positive character.

Keep an open mind, learn some of the lingo, go with the flow... the best advice I can give to any newcomer.

Maybe I'll see you out and about!

The centre of the city is based on Nagoya station, with the 'Twin Towers' over it and a couple other skyscrapers around (most notably Toyota's new head office). a couple km to the west are three rivers that make the border of the city. Nakamura is roughly between the station and the river, wrong side of the tracks really, but anyhow so what. About a km east of the station is Sakae, which is the Department store precinct and nightlife area which also has 'Central Park'.
Just south of Sakae is the Osu shopping precinct with the big electrical stores and the lots of smaller low-end shops.

Other places of interest are Meieki (behind the station), Kanayama south down towards the port and Nagoya Port area itself (an aquarium and a fake Venice). Nagoya castle is a km or so north of Sakae. Further east is Higashiyama Park Zoo and the posh end of town around Yagoto.

that should get you started.
