Do universities hire expatriates in English / other departments?

What qualifications do they require?

Is there any difference between public / private?

Your feedback would be much appreciated.

Very, very rare indeed to find foreigners teaching at Indo universities. Those that do are usually paid via some grant or foundation based in the west. Fact is that a university lecturer's salary is very poor indeed and even the best state universities (UI, Gajah Mada, ITB) couldn't possibly afford the visa fees and foreigner 'taxes'. I know a highly qualified Indonesian lecturer from ITB who found he could double his salary by teaching high school brats in a private school.

I have met FT's teaching at other universities but these tend to be spouses of people with real salaries who just have an official job so as to obtain a KITAS - even if they pay the fee themselves.

Bumping an old thread. I'm kind of interested in this as well, as I'm working on my MA, possibly my PhD later, and I'm wondering if the situation has changed any recently. I know that the pay for most foreigners working in universities is very bad--I know a couple of guys who were getting paid 2 million rupiah a month in Malang, but that was six years ago. Atma Jaya has a few real foreign professors with overseas uni experience, but that is a Catholic school and is probably tied to some religious organization. Binus, too, has some foreign lecturers, but the pay isn't any more than you'd make at a high-range English course.

What I'm interested in, though, are some of the private Chinese/Christian universities that have popped up over the last five years. I've heard that some of these are English-only campuses, and I imagine they must have a few foreign lecturers. Does anyone have any recent news regarding this job market? I don't ever want to work in an English course again, and I'm not too crazy about teaching brats in an international school either.

There are a few bule lecturers now at the private universities such as Binus and UPH. I did see an ad for a Binus post quite some time ago. I've no idea what the salary would be - I imagine a bit more than at Binus Simprug school and SPH. Very few posts, though.

Sampoerna Foundation set up a teacher training institute in Jakarta last year or so and I know they have recruited the odd bule.

I am a English lecturer in Cikarang, not far from Jakarta. We hire expats and the uni offers a good package. If you want more information, please PM me.
