If you do come, start applying and interviewing with every company you can right away. Don't wait. When NOVA goes under, most, if not all available jobs in eikaiwa will disappear fast. Might even be prudent to take a couple of sick days right away so that you can interview with other schools. Maybe applying online or sending interest e-mails to some of these places before you get on a plane would be a good idea. Couldn't hurt.
Good luck! |

Already contacted some schools and started looking for more. I got 4 days after I land, and I might take a few more "sick" days to look around. Crazy times for sure, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. |

According to the information I have, all union members were paid in full yesterday, regardless of their location. |

My Nova friends in the city got an announcement that they would be paid Tuesday. I wasn't really that surprised, I'm an ALT and am paid by the government and my pay is delayed until Tuesday too, along with all the other Japanese teachers I work with. Hopefully things work out and they get paid Tuesday, and this doesn't happen regularly. |

Strange, hopefully this is just a coincidence and not a sign that somehow Nova's misfortune is spreading like some sort of black magic curse to other schools
My biggest concern is that the recruiting office felt it was neccessary to call me up personally and tell me that money isn't going out. Then to give me three options: Go, Wait or Stay. Two out of those three options mean "don't go to Japan"; not exactly a confidence builder. |

in the case of the 15th falling on a weekend, nova has always paid before the weekend.
it is now saying titled instructors won't be paid until wednesday.
you should not be in any doubt about the seriousness of what is happening. |

Yes I must admit to feeling a little antsy about the whole thing. I'm doing four days of overtime this month-I hope I get a paycheck next month! I was actually thinking of quiting and just taking 6 months off or so and just concentrate on studying Japanese-but of course it would be nice to be able to get a job after that time which I might not be able to do with a sudden influx of 5000 teachers into the job market! Perhaps it would be a good idea to start using up those vacation days while I still can... |

It would probably be a good idea. It's gonna be a nasty free for all when this goes down, and I'm sure more than a few people are throwing out resumes right now (I know I am, and I'm not even in country). |

Check out the forums at GaijinPot. There are several there who claim to work for NOVA now and are giving quite a lot of 'inside' information. Apparently many have jumped ship in the last week or two and have found new employment.

Just spoke to the payroll section... the lady spoke very poor English, there are many gaijin who work in that section. |
Sorry to digress from the point of this thread, but if my aged and fading memory serves me correctly in this case (don't count on it, tho' ), there are no foreigners in the "payroll section" (Jinji Kanri Ka). There are, of course, numerous foreigners in the Foreign Affairs Sections (Gaiji 1-ka and 2-ka), but these are not the "payroll section".
This could all be wildly out of date - not to mention the fact that I don't know exactly which section you called - but FWIW... |

What is a titled instructor, and why are they last priority? |
1. Company Man (Assistant Area Trainer, Area Trainer, Head Office Drone etc).
2. Because, having already demonstrated their willingness to take the side of the company over that of the teachers for a few thousand Yen a month they are considered less likely to walk on the spot if not paid on time.
And because the company considers them expendable. |

Today the titled instructors got their pay delayed for the 3rd time running. I've heard from reliable sources that next week will be crunch time. Forget closing 200 branches, next week could be game over. Everyone is being told to get their plan B ready. This is it. |

They get paid on Tuesday now. Apparently the pay shortage was caused by having to give refunds to students last month. "Apparently" they're good for next month. I've heard that there's going to be a big meeting on Tuesday to decide what to do. Let me tell you, working today when we didnt know if we were going to be paid was absolutely shit and demoralizing. Nothing worse than listening to those fucking people talking about talking hula dancing than listening to them talking about hula dancing and not getting paid for it. Our branch was on the verge of topatsuing until Tuesday when things got straightened out-but we've decided to work. It's gonna be absolute shit but I think NOVA will last for a couple of more months at least-especially if they get an infusion of cash and restructure. That should be enough time for me to get my holidays used up and get the hell out of there. |
