| I cannot say I have ever come across ethics in TEFL. Has anyone else? |
I believe that there ARE ethics in TEFL. In my language school in Romania, for example, we pay local teachers 50 eurocent an hour, 75 cent if they work after 9pm. They seem very happy with this.
Some might claim these teachers are underqualified and inexperienced, but in fact many of them have 60 years of work experience, while others of course are young and vibrant having just finished high school. They are all well qualified, and we insist they do our own in-house TEFL cert course, which costs 3,000 euro. We don't even make them pay in advance, being aware of their seriously straitened circumstances, for example the woman with 8 children, and instead we allow them to pay us back over 5 years from their salary, at just 5% interest.
Our native speaking teachers are similarly well looked-after. We have a special benevolence programme, where we encourage applications from financially challenged travellers, and our representatives are often to be found around the Gara de Nord in Bucharest scouting for near-destitute backpackers we might be in a position to help.
We are also very hardworking, and ensure that all our teachers do a minumum of 50 hours of teaching a week. We also believe in being well equipped, and thus insist that teachers provide their own markers etc.
We even recommend books to our students, our own in-house-produced textbook, which is very good and only costs 100 euro for the student's book and 50 for the workbook. As many of our students like an easy life, and others have told us they are very busy with their work, this workbook is only 44 pages long.
Of course, we advise students against all those rip-off TEFL qualifications, and instead we give them a high-quality certificate of our own. All our students are guaranteed this if they pass, and if they don't, we will provide it for a modest fee.
We are affiliated to the Noua Institut de Professorii Limba Engleza si Straine (NIPLES) of Romania, and our high level contacts in the Education Ministry tell us we are highly regarded by those who matter. The old institute was (unfairly) disbanded due to allegations of corruption; we weren't a member, although the old company under which we once traded was.
No-one has ever made any complaints to us; if they did, we would be happy to refer their complaints onwards to the appropriate authorities.
We pride ourselves on our ethics and high standards, and believe there are many establishments just like us operating on the global TEFL scene.

I guess that's known as "Tongue in Cheek", Bebs. Have a look back through the posts (PREVIOUS, PAGE 3) at the first "DO YOU WANNA RETIRE ON A PENSION OR ON YOUR KNEES" by MEDRACER for a similar diatribe.
