No laughing here.
My first experience living in Japan was produced by NOVA. I didn't love the job, but It wasn't the worst situation, either. I loved living in Kanazawa, though, and working there with NOVA gave me the chance to really develop a strong attachment to Japan and was a good gateway for me to move on to a better living and working situation.
I know that there are people working at NOVA right now who feel the same way. It's too bad that people who are working there and feel very strongly about remaining in Japan have to be living with this kind of stress right now. I really do hope things work out for the best. |

| This is not going to be good for anyone except the dispatch companies, subcontractors and anyone else who wants to drive the salaries of English teachers down further. Non-NOVA teachers shouldn't gloat over the fate of their eikaiwa brethren as it will simply mean more people fighting over fewer jobs. |

That assumes that NOVA doesn't declare bankruptsy to get out of paying all their fines (including final paycheques), and then reopens a week later called NOBA.
It also assumes that there isn't anybody waiting in the wings to take NOVA's place, which is also not the case. |

There is, of course, going to be a lot of students suddenly without a school to go to. But I think a lot of them are going to be put off by losing a wad of cash and aren't likely to want to invest in another rickety-looking school. It might come as a bit of a Godsend to the other companies who have been leaking cash and lessen their necessity to undercut the competition but really the English conversation industry is pretty much saturated. |

Most so-called highschool teachers are not even highschool teachers, but rather illegally dispatched and exploited temp workers who's jobs are even less stable than any teacher on that ship that shall not be mentioned. A trivial or even imaginary complaint from the client and the temp is gone. At least teachers on that accursed ghost ship have another chance and are given the opportunity to sign a letter of commitment before they're forced to walk the plank.
Avast there! Splice the mainbrace! Mend and make clothes! Arrr! |
