This just in. Nova could be on the verge of closing down approximately 200 schools.

There is no could about it except the actual number of schools. I work for the MM center in Osaka and we are the most well protected but I have friends who's friends/roommates have been paid late (everyone I know of has been paid as of Tuesday) and a quite a few are being transferred to other branches because Nova is closing the branches. I even know of several people that were given 30 days notice to move out of their apartment because the owners canceled Nova's lease.

Things are going very bad for Nova, I suggest if you plan to stay in Japan and work for Nova you really seriously start looking for a new job because there is no job stability at Nova right now.

Just to clarify, I don't think Nova will close all its doors, but there will be a huge size decrease and restructuring, so many teachers will be able to stay, but many won't.

Finally, someone posted a reputable news source and didn't continue to spin the wheel of hearsay. Thanks, Yawarakajin.

Uh-oh. I wonder if that story is going to hit the mainstream papers or just the Japan Today. If so, there will be a lot of interesting conversations at school tomorrow.

So glad I turned down their job offer.

Seems like every board has a "Nova is done" thread.

This news is obviously very bad for those employed at any branches that are closing. The Japanese staff at these places are always under incredible pressure, and the foreign staff are usually fresh off the boat with little clue as to their rights.

The government should use this crisis to reform the private language school system, bring it up to date and away from the used car lots they have become.

More likely is that other eikaiwa like Nova will just use Nova's problems to carpetbag some new customers.

Japan Today is good for headlines, but fall way short in terms of professional reporting.

Well...what I did mean was that someone finally posted a link to a concrete "news source" rather than just prefacing hazy statements with "I've heard" or "a source close to me" or "I heard from a friend of a friend."

Hmm...I am a Japan newbie and didn't realize the quality of Japan Today's reporting leaves something to be desired.

I'll keep that in mind. Many thanks for setting me straight.

It is okay but their sources are basically the same as the sources of those posting here for the most part. In other words it is simply the same hearsay only this is hearsay that has appeared "in print".

No worries man. I did not mean my comment as a shot at you in any way. Just agreeing with the other guy that JT is sometimes lacking in details when it comes to its reporting,
