Last night, my co-foreign teacher and I miraculously stumbled upon coloured fairy lights in a bargain store- the kind you string on Christmas trees and around your windows. We bought a half dozen and brought them back to the flat in a fit of holiday spirit. The other two foreigners, a married couple, had been piqued by a similar spirit and had filled their flat with boughs from trees in the garden, strung up with pine cones and little oranges. Here in Turkey, it is easy to forget that Christmas even exists because there are no constant reminders from October onwards. We realized when we saw the lights that we were barely 2 weeks till the day. We began stringing up the lights, put on Christmas carols, made some sangria, and felt immensely homesick en masse... |

Yaramaz,
Happy 'feeling homesick'....... I was in Israel last Christmas, and you'd think there of all places it would have felt 'Christmas-sy' but it didn't, and I never got to see one camel or angel either...... ) Mind you, you'd have to be insane to go to Bethlehem these days, it often occupied by uptight Israeli soldiers and angry Palestinians.
I'm going to be back home in Britain for this year and I have to say despite all the commercial glitz and other crap, it has been nice to the winter countryside, frosty dawns/dusks and some old friends and family who were long overdue a visit.
I hope that wherever you are, and whatever your particular religious persuasion, you have a great holiday! |

I will miss out on The Grinch and A Charlie Brown's Christmas. I really wish that I had a copy of both to show my students, especially the scene where Linus describes the "real meaning of Christmas," and where the Grinch finds out that "Christmas is not something that comes from a store." |

We found Charlie Brown in Xi'an, Wolf. Showed the Grinch TV special last year and will show both of them this year if we have electricity at class time, which as you know probably means we'll show neither of them.
Merry Christmas all. |
