I was speaking from personal observation while at Hail, KSA. the situation there is poor.
I realize the closer you get to the major population centers, the more western education facilities are available.
It is a matter of how many Riyals do you have to buy the kid's tuition.
For the right price, the best is available.

I looked at the tuition prices for The International Schools group in Khobar. It will cost me almost 2 months salary....ouch! I hope the university offers a decent education allowance.
Ow Ow Ow, I'm still feeling the pain |

| I've heard that PMU pays the entire amount for grades 1-12 at ISG. Don't know about KFUPM or other employers in the area. ISG schools have a good reputation, so maybe they're worth the tuition money. How many kids do you have? What ages are they? Some schools have limits on the number of children they will pay for, and some schools will not pay tuition for kindergarten or preschool. |

Thanks Bob for the info. I have two girls 4 1/2 (5 in Dec) and 3 1/2 . I like the International school and if PMU of KFU can pay some or all of it, then that's Kudos for me.
I might appy for a job there too! They pay 42,000 US dollars, free airfare, and free apt. I use to be a first grade teacher in my past life. |

Wow! If you have credentials as a first grade teacher, why don't you try for a job at the international schools. Those are some very happy people. They take excellent care of their teachers and you would have a lot more benefits than at any Saudi university.
Also, there are some good teacher trainer jobs being advertised for both Oman and the UAE. They usually require experience in TEYL (Teaching English to Young Learners, for those not in the know). These would be great jobs for someone like you. I think I saw the Oman position on Higher Ed.com.
Good luck to you, and I hope your kids have a great time living and learning in a new culture. |

I've arrived late to this thread, but just to go back to the women taking taxis issue. I think Bob is being a little overdramatic: I am a woman living in Riyadh and have routinely taken taxis alone for several years now. Other than the occasional - easily ignored - attempt at 'inappropriate banter' from the taxi driver, I have never had a problem.
I have heard one or two second- or third-hand stories about women having more serious problems with taxi drivers, but even assuming these stories are accurate, such issues do not appear to be more prevalent here than they would be elsewhere. In any case, once you find a driver you like or trust, you can use him as your regular driver. |

Well, the area of Riyadh where I live - a city where no one walks - is being outfitted with posh wide pavements for promenaders, cobble stoned and bedazzled with genuine "Victorian" streetlamps. We've had an epidemic of coffee shops open recently - now about 12 within a five minute walk from my house. Feeling jittery. |

I hear that a busload just arrived at PMU. Some newbies to KSA and some veterans. How long will they last ?
I wish them all well in what seems to be the thriving private sector of university ed. |

Accommodation for teachers at PMU is certainly glitzy. No maintenace though. It is fine having a bathroom with gold taps but what happens when you need a plumber ? (Or 'plumper' as they are often known here)

It is very true the housing at Oryx I is very posh and comfy.
Yes, we do have an active maintenance person. We also have a very good cadre of resident "fixer-upper" talent.
So if it is an essential repair, it will happen as soon as the Ramadan timing will allow it.
Note: Univ. of Hail had 16 returning teachers. It has a student enrollment of 800 this term. Major crash in progress!
Note: PMU still has openings. Send in your CV for a Feb. 2008 hiring.

Who needs maintenance in the land of "if it's not spanking new and in perfect working order, chuck it out and buy a new one". |
