I've been reading the Costa Rica comments here for a few weeks. I am impressed with how helpful some of you are! Gracias!

It all starts with a dream and a bit of courage I'd love to hear the stories of how some of you came to settle in Costa Rica.

I have a dream to join you down there, but I have to extract myself from a job, a condo full of 20 years of belongings. It may take me a few years to accomplish, but talking to you here... is my start. My first step is to plan my first visit to Costa Rica. What type of itinery would you suggest for an adventorus single 50 year old woman who loves the outdoors and who wants to live a simple life and teach english there in the future?

You can definitely get to a lot of places by the public bus system. Here are the places I've seen and really liked:

Arenal Volcano area
Cahuita on the Caribbean coast
the beaches in Guanacaste
Monteverde

I've also heard good things about Montezuma. I didn't really like Manuel Antonio that much, but I know that a lot of other people really like it.

Enjoy!

My story about moving to Costa Rica is rather simple. I was sitting in my apartment in Oslo one day and realized I was getting nothing out of what I was doing at the time. I started researching the ins and outs of English teaching, something I'd thought about doing for a while. I settled on TEFL International, which seemed professional and serious. I remember looking at the list of locations and exluding most of them immediately, leaving Taiwan and Costa Rica. I didn't want to go East just yet (as it is part of a greater plan for later on in my life), so I looked up Costa Rica in the CIA World Factbook. It didn't appear particularly dangerous, so in mid-December I signed up for the TEFL course and got the plane tickets. A month later I left and never looked back.
