I need advice for my friend. He has three kids and his wife says they need to return to his home country because there is no future here; no security and the schools suck (exploitative).
Thanks in advance.

Your wife is right, your "friend" needs to move on. I mean his wife, obviously.

Of course, if you think the advice I am giving you is a bit direct and not taking into account all the specifics of "your friend's" situation then that is probably because you gave us nothing to go on.

I can't. Would you care to elaborate?

Where is home?
How much can your friend earn here?
What are your friend's prospects back home?
Can the wife expect to earn anything?
What are your friend's qualifications?
What does "all the schools suck" mean? Are the salaries low? Are the students bad? Is the friend's heart not in teaching?
Does the friend want to go home or is it just the wife that does?

Where is home?
U.S.

How much can your friend earn here?
Presently 310,000.

What are your friend's prospects back home?
He has no idea.

Can the wife expect to earn anything?
Yes. Presently studying translation.

What are your friend's qualifications?
15 years teaching experience, no degree.

What does "all the schools suck" mean? Are the salaries low? Are the students bad? Is the friend's heart not in teaching?
Sorry, poor choice of words. Employers escape their responsibility to provide insurance, pension and unemployment benefits through the use of one-year contracts stipulating less than 20 hours a week when the job demands double that.

Does the friend want to go home or is it just the wife that does?
He believes she is right, but he is not excited about starting over.

Yes, I think you should leave.

Why do you say that?

For someone with your level of talent, experience, professionalism, qualifications, and integrity, the world is your oyster. Go crack that sucker open!

Oh, same advice holds true for your "friend," of course. Wink

I absolutely loved my time in Japan, and miss the country a lot.
But, both my wife (Japanese) and I agreed that the US would be a better place to raise our Japanese-born son.
Your friend's wife is probably being realistic.

Yeah, I know. Thanks, Andy.
Can I ask what you did when you returned? Did you line up work or deal with it when you got there? How did you decide where to go?
Thanks again, Andy.

I went back to my previous profession: parole & probation officer. Not an ideal job, but the pay is okay, and I gotta make money to support the wife and kid. I'm in Oregon, where I lived before I went to Asia, but in a different city.

Sweetpea,

If your friend has been here this long, how is it he or she is still working on one-year contracts with no benefits?

Just seems odd he or she never made more contacts.

Your friend should look into his or her options back home with translation, etc. After 15 years, he or she can probably speak Japanese.

I think Sweetsee is talking about himself, at least the description fits to a "T".

Surely not! If Sweetsee were talking about himself then why would he say it is for a friend? Wouldn't that be dishonest?

Howdy C,

I think Sweetpea is asking for a friend. This poster has done that before. You joined recently, but I've been reading the post he or she makes for a few years now, and he or she is usually pretty straightforward when it comes to posting.

Enjoy,

B
