Try going to www.mekongesl.com and check their jobs forum. I remember there being some references to schools in Danang there. Most teaching work outside HCMC and Hanoi is volunatary and there are a lot of teachers working as volunteers around Danang so don't expect to earn too much down there.

Not easy. There are very few schools in Danang, and the turnover rate is pretty low as a lot of guys there are long-timers. Didn't help that the big SITC branch there closed down (as it did across the country), and that forced a couple of folks to move on to Hanoi or Saigon for lack of alternatives. It might be possible, but you'd almost have to start on really low hours (almost all schools are by the hour) and hope that someone else at your academy quits and so you'll be able to take over theirs. Pay ranges from $11-15/ hr, hours always fluctuate. Demand for English teachers is surprisingly low for a city of its size, and most academies there don't exactly have sterling reputations to justify their high tuition costs. Check it out if you're in the area and you have time, ask around town. Danang is the only possibility for work in central Vietnam - the few academies in Hoi An get filled pretty easily, and Hue is completely without English schools last I heard. I wouldn't hold out much hope for anything in the area, but never hurts to try. Good luck.

Don't work for ILA

http://www.saigonesl.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=301

Also if you check their website you see that they pay at the bottom end of what is acceptable in Vietnam.

A school like this should have trouble finding teachers.

While I do teach for ILA and have for the past 5 months I am in NO way a recruiter for them. I find it funny that I try and post some bit of info that may help and someone writes this. Someone asked about jobs in Danang and I know that ILA is opening a branch there, therefore it would be a job in Danang. I am just doing this job to pass time. If I was a recruiter for ILA I would not be breaking my year contract after 7 months, which is what I am doing in June so I can go back to graduate school for tropical botany. ESL is no where near important enough to me to actually recruit for a place I hate. I think ILA has no regard for their teachers and treat us like dirt. I do however think it is an extremely easy place to work for a bit till you find something better, they have a ton of resources and lesson plans already made. If you are looking for a rewarding place to work that will take care of you and pay you well than ILA is not for you. I just chose them as you can break a contract with them with a months notice. Trust me, my life is much more important than going from place to place teaching rich kids English (I say rich kids as they are the only one's that can afford classes here in Vietnam at least). Sorry I was trying to help out with the info I have available to me as I teach in Vietnam. If I pm-ed you, which I don't remember it was to offer info to you that you were looking for and not in anyway to tell you to work for ILA, I would do that to no one as I truly don't care enough to. I strongly dislike ILA, teaching English in general, and just come on this message board out of boredom during class breaks.

MOD EDIT

As for working with ILA....if you want to pass 6 months by, it isn't that bad if you keep to yourself and enjoy where you live. If you are looking to work longer than that DO NOT work for ILA....it would drive you insane. They also use lead based paints and did nothing to separate the construction sites from the classrooms so during class you could see toxic dust in the air and the noise was unbearable. I also wrote to the owners and managers on this one as well as it was in utter disregard to health and well being of all the students. I included print outs on the EPA's regulations regarding lead based paint and construction sites. The response I got was basically this is Vietnam so deal with it. Thus I am out in July.....recruiter??

But like I said before, if you want to work in Da Nang they have a branch opening. I am offering this as advice on a place in Da Nang that is a school. NO where in my first post did I mention that it is a particularly exceptional employer

oh yeah one more thing. While ILA may not be the best employer, this job is all about the students and once you are in class it is great. One thing I have come to enjoy are how awesome the students in this country are. They learn and study harder than any other children I have ever been around. Sorry had to give some defense to how wonderful the students are no matter what school you teach at and while I dislike the job I still work my ass off.

Sorry to go offtopic, but ....How's the SCUBA around Danang?

I've been told that the best spots to look for ESL teaching jobs and good SCUBA (on days off from teaching) is around Danang and Nha Trang. Nha Trang has a few dive shops, so presumably the diving's good-- but how about Danang?

Also, how is ILA about schedules? I've spoken to at least 1 school (can't remember what chain it was) that said many teachers teach split shifts-- one set of classes at the crack of dawn, and the other in the evenings...and teach classes an amazing 7 days a week. Is that typical?

There is no diving in Danang. The one diving instructor I knew there quit.
