If you to Ajarn.com you will read about the Thailand shakedown that happened in 2006. Many FT's were deported, ran or fled, some came to China or left to other countries.
In 2007, many FT's thought the wages would go up because they seemed to clean-up the fraudsters and backpacker groups. Simple Supply and Demand ratios; however, this did NOT happen.
The Thai schools hired Filipino teachers in mass numbers turning the staff numbers over to a Native Speaker to Filipino ratio of about 50/50 to 80/20.
It was not uncommon to cut loose 8 out of each 10 FT's and replace them with > half-salary Filipino's. The Filipino's were highly (paper) qualified too.
(Masters in Education +English Filipino teacher getting1/3 the salary to replace a BA/BS Native Speaker FT)
Thus, the wages never went up and actually stagnated or dropped.
You can read all about it on Ajarn if interested. Many FT's thought the parents would complain or have a backlash towards the schools that did not have a White face teaching.
Thus, has not happened yet and they been utilizing massive Filipino teachers this whole 2007 school year.
I'm not sure if this would happen in China, but you never know. |
