I know that you are a big saudi fan which is why am asking your advice.
i got a job offer to work in saudi university ...am currently working in kuwait with half the salary I will get from my prospective job in saudi.
I heard a lot of stuff about the lifestyle in saudi and how kuwait is much more liberal . i also read that it is not advisable to live and work in saudi if someone is under 40! Am 29 yrs and I dun know if more money will b worth putting up with the more sedate lifestyle in saudi.
I am in a desperate need for an advice! |

Wouldn't put it that way myself. I like my current job and the lifestyle I have here suits me, though there are certainly things about the country that drive me nuts, and I have had at least one unpleasant work experience here.

Sounds odd - wouldn't you be better asking advice from someone who is more 'objective' , your view?

I have never put it that way myself, either. I suppose when people say things like this, they are assuming that 'young' people want to live in places with lots of nightlife and opportunities to meet the opposite gender, whereas 'older' people do not. Basically, if you are able/willing to make your own fun, are largely self-sufficient and don't need a lot of outside entertainment, you can be happy in KSA - whether you are 22 or 62. I don't imagine it would be very different in Kuwait, however.

Is KSA really more 'sedate' than Kuwait? From what I've heard there's very little difference in the lifestyle for expats in both countries, especially if you're a man. Kuwait is hardly Paris, or even Dubai. |

I'd guess that the major difference outside of what Cleo has already mentioned is dress code. You won't see the street full of women in Western fashion with barely an abaya to be seen as you do in Salmiya.
Oh yeah... and if you are driving in Kuwait, you can't in Saudi.
Neither of those are major problems in the short term, so if you really need the money at this time, it should be easy enough to do a couple years.
That said, these are two of the major reasons that I chose not to go.  But I wasn't looking at that large a salary difference.

As I've said, while there may be a few significant differences between KSA and Kuwait if you are a woman (although despite what some seem to think, you don't have to give up on wearing "Western fashion" here) , I don't think it's all that different for men.
I would also add that the differences between individual employers are probably far greater - and potentially far more significant - than between KSA and Kuwait in general. Where you work can have a far greater impact on your happiness than the country you are in - especially when we are talking about two countries which are pretty similar in most regards. |

Walking down the street and in the restaurants and in the malls? I'm talking about in public here... not what one wears under the abaya. 
It was quite rare to even see an abaya in Kuwait where I lived and worked and shopped.

Of course not, but who cares?
Wearing an abaya in public in KSA is for me no more troublesome than wearing a coat when I go out in my home country. Just as I would not put much care into what I wear when going shopping or walking to work anywhere else, I don't do so here either.
I understand that not everyone takes this view and certainly, if you need to show off your jeans and t-shirt at all times, KSA is not for you. |

For some, the above view is a 'conservative' one.
I have seen some people in UK wearing their Pyjamas while doing their shopping!!
And I have seen some women half nacked while going to shops and pubs! |
