I am a 30-ish American with a BA in English and teaching experience who arrived last week in Istanbul to attend ITI's CELTA course through December.
I may have a job in Atesehir with a tiny center primarily for young children that paid well. Most students would be young children at absolute beginner levels. After teaching an hour of a trial class last night left me a bit put-off for a few reasons. Of course, he may not even offer the job now. He seemed a bit annoyed at my questions and professional input regarding early childhood education. He's supposed to get back to me today.
Berlitz, naturally, offered me work PT. A few people at EF/ITI said I should just work there through the CELTA and look for work in January. My question is will I be given 20 hours or at least enough to pay for a room and food working PT for Berlitz? Also, is there work to be found in January or is that too serious a gamble?
One last thing, I'm looking for a room to rent, in case anybody needs a flatmate.

As for rooms, try Expatinturkey.com and expatriates.com sites, also craigslist has listings for Turkey if you haven't been to these already. |

I would go for Berlitz. They have a uniform method of teaching, very organized, which some criticize, but the Berlitz 'name' still carries weight in the world of EFL, and they are still in business all over the world.
If you do well at Berlitz, and keep your nose clean, they will increase your hours.
I know many who have chosen to remain at Berlitz for life. They have a good network.

Berlitz is an apalling franchise of Mc Schools. It was started by a charlatan and its "method" is completely atheoretical. The term "method" in itself should fill you with horror.
So what if they are still in business. What sad loser would stay working in a Mc School for life?
As for a network-so do Mc Donalds. |

Berlitz has a uniform method, and they usually teach within 'the box' but that is the way some students like to learn. There are all kinds of learners and learning styles.
Do you honestly think Berlitz would have lasted that long in this business if their methods were that bad?
For some types of learners, Berlitz is suitable, because the output from the teacher is predictable, with a lot of repetition, and non threatening. Asian students often like this, because creativity is not necessarily needed. Asian students (Korea, Taiwan, China, Japan) often like to know exactly what will be on the 'menu' - and Berlitz is very predictable in that regard.
Berlitz is expensive. Clients who take 1 to 1 classes pay up to $50 an hour or more, but many diplomats or foreign expats who are about to move to a foreign country 'use' Berlitz for that exact purpose, and Berlitz delivers the goods. The vocabulary and language used are tailored to the client.
Also, Berlitz hires humans who are different. Even though the method is universal, teachers who teach the course are different, and there is some scope for 'conversation' within the class, as long as the daily stipulated lesson has been met.
Berlitz is also looking to move with the times, just like McDonalds is also looking to revamp their menus with more healthy options.
Your portrait of Berlitz, for the above reasons, was a little harsh. Others who may have worked there might agree.

I didn't mean it but I screwed Berlitz over. I was working with the partners in an accountancy firm. (the 5th largest in the world) and they had notice from Head office in Holland they were starting up a worldwide contract with Berlitz. when the senior partner, my student, asked me about Berlitz I told them they were sh.t based on my knowledge. In the past I knew a couple of backpackers who had worked there and had also seen the coursebooks.
The company here in Turkey told head office in Holland that they didn't want lessons from Berlitz...... this has led to the cancellation of a worldwide contract. oops |
