I know that some provinces still do this. Anyone know if this is true?

Hi Naturegirl. Really going to make it to China? This thread has been done so many times. The school, if it has a legal right to hire you, asks the province office for a work permit letter, which they send you. This is not a big deal. If the school does not do this, I would be suspicious. There is no reason not to. Sooner or later you need it, by law

Chinese law, can't quote it for you; no, you can not change from an L visa to a z-visa in country. The z visa purpose is only to enter to the country. It gives you 30 days in country before you have to get your residence permit. To "change", no, correctly, to cancel the tour visa, and then apply for a z-visa, so you can then get your residence permit, you must go outside in China (if you are already in China, why/how can they give you an entry visa, you have already entered.), so you can reenter again on the z-visa.
Hong Kong is still officially outside China, and where many go for this purpose, to the famed everbright company. Over the years, every one I know who has had to do this has done so at their own expense and trouble.

Does the PSB in some places still illegally do this, based on the school's "guanxi"? I suppose it is conceivable, but it is not the law. if there is such guanxi, getting the letter from the government for you to get your z-visa is no big deal. Absolutely no reason a school should not be able to do this.
Unless they have no legal right to hire you.

Would be interested in who told you this. Not coming on a z-visa, you just open yourself to a boatload of potential headaches.

Now, lets here from the person who say, well I know someone who did it any never had any problems. Save yourself the hassle. COme on a z-visa

A few places have done this method.

Hire you under a K visa.

You come to China, they check your medical condition (physical)
-paperwork
-Demo lesson

If you pass whatever muster requirements they have

Then send you to HK to return back with a Z visa.

I've seen this happen, you must insure they pay the for the HK trip as some try to force this upon the teacher.

Other times you get the full Z visa without doing this above method.

If it's a great job, it might be worth trying. If you do, and there is any problem, you will need to have back up money to go to Hong Kong. Have your contigencies in place. And be firm, otherwise they will think they can take you for a ride if they are not on the up and up.

I know it may be too late to convince Naturegirl, but I just happen to be savvy about which school in Suzhou she refers. They are definitely on the up and up and can legally hire teachers and quickly and effeciently get them their Res. Permit and FEC to boot! So, yes, coming to China/Suzhou on a Z-visa is what she'd want to do.

Looks like I won't be in China after all. I was waiting for a position in Korea and never heard from them. Turns out that they had emailed me on Monday, but somehow I never got the email. RIght now it comes down to money, so I'll be in Korea for a year, then after that, I'd like to go to China or Taiwan. Let's see what my husband thinks. I really wish that I could go to China now, but money-wise it's not possible

i hate to say it, but this summer I have toyed with going to Korea, My school did give me a 200/month raise. But being married now and a wife depending on me ... and the endless hassles or every 10 yuan bill.... of all the countries, I actually enjoy TEACHING in China the most ... but there are just too many newbies willing to work at dirt salaries that the Chinese are all too willing to hire.
If I hear the school telling me one more time,,, oh but you make so much more then such and auch teacher. I have written in my contract whath they must pay me next year, so I am not tempted by their other promises.
I would rather teach in China, but Korea might really be a "wise" option. But I decided some years ago, better to be foolisg then wise.
