I posted this on the North American forum, but in case you miss it, I'll post it again here.
This December 28th, we get a new Prime Minister. Jean Chretien is retiring (can you believe it?) and Paul Martin will take over as the PM of our vast country. After all this time with Chretien at the helm, it will take a while to get used to the idea of a new leader. |

Hey, I went to college with Paul Martin! Well, so much for Canada.
If it's the same Paul Martin, that is. |

| I keep thinking to myself: Please let him be of the Trudeau school of rich guys and not the Mulroney school of rich guys. We can't afford any more "free trade". |

Wow, a new PM for the first time since I was in high school. I'm hardly up on Canadian politics anymore, so I'm not sure how/if this is going to affect things.
For the better, I hope. |

| What are some of your predictions fro Mr. Martin? What do you think he will be like? He seems to be gettting lots of new blood in the Cabinet. My impression is that he will be more pro-American. Heck, it would be impossible to be more anti-American then Jean. He is also more of a businessman than Cretien is and may be wiser in that respect. We'll have to see. |

Whenever I see Mr. Cretien's name, I want to pronounce it as "cretin."
Hey, what is Brian Mulroney doing these days?
A more important question: what is the Great One doing these days? I bet he could still skate for Edmonton and net 30 goals. |

@Gordon...If you are looking for political commentary, you've got the wrong gal. I don't follow politics too closely and really have no more than a passing interest in what goes on in Ottawa. I did hear that there are 22 new cabinet ministers, so a few changes are definitely taking place, but Martin is a Liberal so I don't know if policy will really change. Time will tell.
What makes you think Jean Chretien was anti-American? Perhaps he was just very pro-Canadian. |

Dear Capergirl,
I'd say Mr. Chretien was anti-Bush, rather than anti-American. In fact, that, in my opinion, would make him "pro-American."
Regards,
John
P.S. Sorry for the misspelling, Steiner

Yes, anti-Bush would be abetter way to put it. He never did make it to the Texas Ranch did he? Leaders of Russia and China did (such important allies to America historically ), but not Canada. |

That's what I love about Canada: we get to change leaders without all the bother of an election.

Martin is still Liberal, which means we are still in trouble. LIke I follow politics AT ALL....
And yes, I admit, having a PM whose name was Cretien (oh so close to CRETIN), bothered me.
Maybe at least, Martin can speak English and be understood.... |
