|
|
I was just reading the "International Jobs" section and came across an ad to teach at Wall Street in the Ratu Plaza (Jakarta). The advertisement says "We have the best working conditions of any English school in Indonesia".
Hmmmm.... Whenever I read something like that I cringe....
Anyways, it goes on to say that teachers will be required to teach 30 contact hours per week with additional time spent helping students learn outside the class.
I wonder if they have ever heard of "class preparation"....
.
"We will also provide full training in the WALL STREET METHOD"
Yikes..... |

Scary indeed...new employees should be ready to be ready to forget all the long years of experience they may have plus any chance of a life outside the classroom? You will teach how we tell you to teach...which will invariably be some halfarsed "modern" method stolen from Europe..I've heard of quite a few teaching "methods" and even tried some myself -The Wall Street method is not one of them! maybe I should start marketing my patented "EZEKIEL METHOD" could be worth a few bob! adios Ez |

I work for Wall Street and they are the best school I have worked at in Jakarta. They are the most professional, trustworthy and offer the most for students and teachers alike. Yes I work on Sundays but have Friday and Saturday free (all year) so can't complain. Shift is rotated around the staff. Interesting also is that unlike EF schools where if a student fails they still go through and the teacher wears all the blame, students are expected to do well in student manuals and online projects as well.
So all in all, I would recommend Wall Street to anyone looking for a teaching job. |

That's great that you are working in a school that you like....
Perhaps you could let "us" all know about the working conditions... as the advertisement they had on Dave's indicated 30 teaching hours per week plus additional time to help students..
What are the "most for teacher's" benefits like?
Lastly.. What is the "Wall Street Method"..?
Thanks... |

i went for an interview at W.S. just to check it out.
while the facilities and program looked top-notch (mostly self-study using computers), I thought the compensation was insufficient for what they were asking:
-30 contact hours/wk (it's a split shift so you'll be at the office all day)
-End of contract bonus only 10juta
- if the school is always busy, how will you ever get a chance to take those 10 days off per year?
-teachers are required to plan and teach classes outside the curriculum which they can develop themselves (hmmm creativity time).
but on the other hand:
+ minimum age 16 (no more kids ).
+ no games required (or expected)
if there was some kind of housing assistance, (like a free apartment haha) i might think on it some more. |

Sounds like it is worse than EF. I often wonder why schools have to advertise outside Indonesia, when they could find Teachers inside Indonesia.
I suspect that Schools that offer the worse pay and conditions, advertise outside Indonesia because no one will work for them inside Indonesia. |

When I was doing a job hunt, I heard only praise about Wall St. from a former co-worker of mine. (I believe all this is accurate).
a 5-day work week--two days off (2 regular days of your choice)
guaranteed monthly salary (experience taken into consideration)
minimum 30-contact hours; expected 40-office hours/week
full health coverage--covering spouse and family (if I remember correctly)
dental insurance (no details available)
16 holidays a year
1-month completion bonus
Berlitz(Jakarta) is in a class of its own!
starting rate rph50,000/45-minute period (hasn't been raised in 10 years)--expect 6-8 teaching units per day
full-time workers must be available to work 7:30am-9:00pm (72-hours a week)
5-1/2 work days
no Saturdays off if teacher numbers are insufficient to cover classes
no monthly minimum
no holiday pay
no housing
no end-of-contract bonus
medical including dental after probation (3 or 6 months)
limited internet
(one teacher at Berlitz(Pondok Indah) recently had to re-schedule his wedding because he couldn't get the day off:)
. . . . oh yeah, as your salary increases, your number of working hours tends to decrease. |

Wall street have three schools in guangzhou (China) so presumably have operations n Beijing and Shanghai too. Anybody know if this is franchising or a chain school?
There seems to be a trend towards computer generated teaching (or maybe I should call it computer assisted learning), I went to see web international in GZ; a very similar kind of thing , the conversation went like this
(self) 'so, what kind of salaries are you offering?'
'Let me just show you around our modern and well equipt classrooms'
'very nice, how much did you say?'
'Did I mention how modern and well equipt our classrooms are?'
'MMm lovely, now if we could just go back to the idea of money for a second.'
'Ah yes well , we generally start our teachers on ....'
'thanks, i'll give you a call maybe'
Dont forget the old adage- you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. |

I can tell you all that I have worked for both Wall Street and Berlitz and everything the former blogger said is 100% true. I also doubt there is a school in Indonesia with worse conditions than Berlitz. EF comes pretty close though. |
