This is the skinny from one of my Soviet-bloc roommates, who has just finished her Magister at a German university: apparently, the problem with this post-degree-visa is that it states that you have to find a job that's "angemessen" to your degree. Basically, this means that the visa allows you stay in Germany for a year and look for a job that's adequate for the immigration office (typically a full-time, sozialversicherte position). The kicker is, during this period, you can't work (legally) as, like, a waitress or something So when you apply for this visa you have to prove you have enough money to support yourself for the whole job-searching year.

This is a bad deal for anyone supporting themselves. Here's what a few non-EU students I know have done: they apply to do doctorates, which allows a two year visa extension. Then they scamper off and find jobs. What they do at the end of two years, I have no clue.

Doing a German program of study is an option for young people who want to live and work there, but it's not the easiest option.

Jess

Sounds good! I was planning on enrolling in a language school which would grant me a student Visa to stay in the country if I couldn't find work. Good to hear that the student Visa allows you a *brief* period of work. Thanks for the link!
Very Happy

You'd better get married, man. The student visa isn't unlimited.
