Hello fellow posters,

I had a question for those teaching english in Japan. A friend told me that she thought places in Japan paid for rent, however after much research and applying for jobs I have realized that this is not the case. Does anyone know of places where they cover the rent?!?

Thanks!

This is going to be a real hit and miss issue. My old eikaiwa paid my rent, but they were a rarity. The same holds today. JET Programme has some ALTs where their housing is paid for, but you can't know which ones until after you are hired and placed.

I think you really shouldn't be focusing on this sort of thing, because by far you won't find enough places to matter. That is, IMO you should really be looking for other factors to judge an employer by. If free rent is high on your list, you will have a very, very short list, and it will be hard to make.

My old employer paid half my rent. When I looked for a new job I didn't think I would get that kind of benefit and I was right.

Perhaps a more realistic criteria is an employer that sets up an apartment for you, pays all the set-up costs, maybe furnishes it for you. That was what I got with my current employer. Still be far and few between.
