First of all thanks everyone who replied to my last post and those who are replying now.
5000 yuan. Apt. 1500 monthly bonus. 4000 flight, 23 paid days. ABC in Shanghai.
I know its not the best offer, my other job offer is 9500 but no apt. Rent is so expensive in Shanghai, so thats my dilima. Can I get buy on that and have a reasonable style of living in Shanhai?
What is the minimum visa I should get?
Thank you so much.

Find out the location (school & apartment) and if the apartment is shared and has expenses taken care of. If not your monthly power, phone, TV, gas bills could take up to 500 of your bonus especially if you use the aircon a lot (or freeze in winter)
Is the monthly bonus of 1500 guaranteed? If not what how can you receive it?
4000 will get you a one way ticket home..... maybe....
Z visa is the minimum to accept to work legally... If they can't provide that then they are not so legit. 23 days is about right, it will probably be during the national holidays.
Personally I would take the 9500 job, rent somewhere cheaper a few bus stops away from the metro and have less interference from the school when you are not working... |

WW/Zhongguotong,
It's a shame to say, the offers in Shanghai are extremely low now. I guess it's the influx. I assume that certain folk can arrange much better deals, but, for the new arrivals, the Laoban controls.
I was recently given the opportunity to work a full schedule for 9k, without a place to stay.

How many classes/hours are you required to teach per week? 5000RMB for Shanghai is pretty low, but if you only have to teach 15 to 20 hours a week you could always find supplementary work to boost your income. |

Consider the time and cost of traveling to work each day, too.
I received a raise and a promotion at the beginning of this semester, but the campus where I now facilitate classes is a long way from my place in Century Park. Not only do I have to take two subways, but a taxi makes the final stretch. Overall I spend about 3 hours commuting to and from work each day.
Also check to see if your package pays you for the full year. If you only get paid for 10 or 11 months, who's going to cover you during the break?
Speaking of break, are you being covered for medical insurance during your breaks? My contract ends in July and doesn't cover me medically until I return at the end of Auust. As to medical issues, do you have to up front your visa fees and initial health exam? The organization I joined would have you pay for everything and then reimburse you after you pass the probationary period.
Another factor to consider is set up costs. In Shanghai expect to pay one month's deposit, plus three months' rent in advance. You might have to pay an agency fee as well. Let's say you are lucky and find a landlord who doesn't believe that foreigners are made of money. In a good scenario, you might negotiate paying your rent bi-monthly, which is 2600 (or more) X 2 plus electric and water and gas.
Then you might want cable, telephone,,,,

If you find one of those..... work out how and go buy a lotto ticket....
From memory agency fees should be 50% of regular rental price, someone in Shanghai should be able to confirm this. |
