I think it's time to diet...drop a few kilos before Christmas puts them back on. Damn Mexican food is so good it's been making a porky out of me.

I tried a diet a little over a year ago that worked after Shaner asked (btw Shaner, you don't look like you needed to lose the extra baggage)

http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=45096&highlight=coffee+diet

God help me, I'm going to drop 5 kilos before going home to the family this holiday season.

1. don't skip breakfast
2. don't eat meals with significant amounts of carbs and fats at the same time. i.e. eat either protein and carbs or protein and (healthy) fats.
3. stop drinking sugar.
4. avoid eating sugar, fried food, and processed food.
5. drink as much green tea as you can.
6. avoid carbs, especially fast carbs (white bread, pasta, etc), after 6 or 7pm. your body will convert them to fat while you sleep unless you burn them off before going to bed.
7. lift weights. one pound of muscle burns about 75 calories per day just to maintain itself. i believe a pound of fat burns about 3 calories.
8. cheat once in a while!
9. don't blame me when more people start hitting on you.

you should have seen me a year ago. I had the tire man. I used the diet you advised me on and then started to do a lot of walking instead of taking the bus. The problem is that is difficult to maintain weight. Easy to put on weight, but so difficult to take off. Damn.

You don't look like you need to lose weight....you are actually too thin. That is my opinion though.

That diet made me a bit agressive...ok, a lot agressive. But it worked, and no one was hurt.

I was using my ninja-like skills at not letting you see me posed at any chubby angles. But thank you, nonetheless.

Good advice, Matt. Where do tacos and gorditas fit into this? Wink

Is this actually possible in Mexico? No wonder it has the third highest obesity rate in the world.

Walk everywhere. I walk about two hours a day (and Cuernavaca is hilly) so I've lost all the weight I gained in humid Veracruz and more. I also swim every day, though I play in the water more than I actually do laps. Joining a gym isn't necessary if you make a few basic changes to your lifestyle. At the same time, more veggies and fruit, lots of water and no sugary drinks....

I also like Matt's suggestion of cheating now and then. It keeps me sane.

My husband and I are big time aguas frescas promoters. And there are many that do not need a lot of sugar and quench thirst better if they are a little on the tart side. We've never served anyone a soda, not even at our wedding, instead we had 25 gallons of Jamaica, 15 gallons of Horchata and 15 gallons of Agua de Limon.
We use honey when ever we can (Jamaica with a bit of honey, cinnemon and clove it divine!) and living in the hinterland, our access to processed foods is limited.
Now if only those fried goodies weren't so tempting!

I'm afraid I'm of the old school "if you like it eat it" attitude. I'll probably pay the price in 20 years time, but meanwhile I'll enjoy life! e.g. butter tastes much better than polyun-whatsit spreads, especially on crumpets (for you Brits, I make them myself - very easy!)

A few months ago Time magazine had an article about eating habits around the world, and they photographed families with their weekly food consumption spread all over their kitchen. For a lot of the countries I was like, EEEEEEEW... but when I saw the picture of the Mexican family I thought, "I could totally live there and not gain weight!" They had so little meat, dairy and processed foods- just the way I like to eat. I believe - don't quote me on this - that they even had to add an additional category for beans and legumes to their budget breakdown; that category didn't appear on the lists for any other country. Did you bring a lot of your bad Canadian habits with you to Mexico?

Hmm...beer and pizza habits I did bring back. Most of weight gain is down to age (slowing metabolism) and that I don't swim daily like I used to.

It's quite easy to eat fresh foods every day...no need to get processed food at all, with so many fresh fruit and veggie markets, cheese shops, and local butchers.

i think the mexican diet is changing. bimbo is huge, and all their processed crap, and wal-mart is a big thing now, etc. also, i've heard countless times that mexicans have the highest per capita soft drink consumption in the world. i don't doubt it. it's a fat country, which is so sad. but, they'll never catch up with us--we're number one!! Coca-cola in particular. I've read that Mexicans drink 10 times the world average per capita.

CAN YOU GET HAPPY HIPPOS IN MEXICO?

I used to teach at Ferrero in Italy, and I miss my Happy Hippos more than anything else in the whole entire world. They're so wonderful... they cost about 35 cents and they're exactly three bites (bum first, then torso, then head)... the perfect pick-me-up!
