| I think that ESL/EFL is a rather unusual job and not many people understand the reasons for choosing it. I like coming to a place where people know what my job is about and who can relate to my own experiences. There's a certain likemindedness that puts me at ease here. |
Yes, that's true. I think we're a unique bunch of folks, we see through world through the TEFL lens. This lifestyle colors my perception of the world a lot, and it's nice to meet with others who are likewise.
It can be a bit of a shock to meet with other expats who don't do this work for a living. Actually, a large number of expats I know in Shanghai work full-time jobs in companies. Even though we're both guests in China, our lifestyles are so different it's hard to find common ground.
As for Dave's, the general discussion forum is a total goldmine for teacher resources and PD. That's why I'm here, to learn more about teaching methods and quality, and to pass on tips to others. As another poster said, China has a scarcity of teaching resources, so this is the best place to find them.
This week has been exceptionally good for training at our school, however. There is a teaching competition being held among the local staff. All teachers are invited to observe their classes and grade them. The English lessons are the most interesting to observe, and the local teachers use similar methods that I do in class (i.e. PPP, task-based learning). There are evaluation forms that are well-written and the criteria is similar to what we studied in the CELTA course last summer.
There are also classes in other subjects which are fun to attend, especially those in Math, Physics, Economics, and Politics.
On the other hand, I'm a little teed off because obviously the local teachers are being trained in modern teaching methods. So if they get the training, then why not the FTs? I can understand enough Chinese to get the gist of what is going on, a translator can help fill in the details.

I started as a lurker seeing what other TEFLers were up to around the globe. Then I decided to register and give advice and help, and express and exchange opinions with my fellow teachers. I've also enjoyed very much reading some of the threads on this forum, some more acrimonious than others; it makes for splendid entertainment when I've got nothing else to do! |

How can someone say they know Arthur Dent and think 43 is the answer?
Maybe it's time for someone to reread The Guide. |

Like many I lurked ( for a few years) before posting. My first interest was the job info board and the "lists".
Half the time I drop in for a read up on what is happening around the globe, have a lurk on other forums and less and less frequently make a contribution.
The other half I am actively trying to keep abreast of all the fresh, new, brilliant ideas that newbie teachers have and seeing how they can be adapted for me and my classes.
The other half I spend improving my number skills and keeping an eye on the comings and goings of the posters looking for good input from the familiar style of the regulars but bearing an open mind to the contributions of less familiar posters.
Friday night, got to go....
Sad isn't it? |

I was lurking for a long time, but now I'm posting in the hopes of making a big move out of Japan and into a different area of the world. I'm here at Dave's to get a little info and to give a little help with my ESL experience (if anyone wants it, of course).
Best Regards,
