Hello,
I have been surfing this forum for a while and have decided to ask a simple question. ARE 6-month CONTRACTS AVAILABLE ANYWHERE?
I will be doing my post-grad studies next September and I am very interested to go somewhere abroad for a 6-month contract and teach English in the meantime.
ps The only agency I came across that offers 6-month contracts is "People Recruit", who are currently looking for a contract in Korea for me.
Any information regarding this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
Branko |

This was cross-posted I guess - so here is the answer from the other place . . .
There are quite a few good options out there. Probably the best place to look for short-term TEFL work is a newish website called www.TEFLtemp.com
There are links and information to numerous organizations, paid work, volunteer programs, and even a few training/guaranteed short-term work options.
None will make you rich - but all will get you overseas for a "dip your toe in the TEFL water" experience.
Good luck! |

The universities in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico offer 6 month contracts which are renewable. Of course they prefer it if you stay on longer...

Most employers offer 9 month (1 academic year) or 12 month contracts.
Some contracts include clauses threatening penalties for early 'redemption'.
In almost all cases these penalties are illegal/unenforceable by law.
At some companies (eg at Nova, who have over 40% of the Jpanese EFL market and employ some 7000 foreigners, the average (median) length of stay of a new foreign (male) techer is reputed to be 6 months; for new foreign (female) teachers it is reputed to be 8 months. |

I've seen several job postings with contracts for 4 months over the summer in the UK. |

I ran into the same issue while searching for 6-month contracts from my computer in Chicago last summer. The last thing I wanted to do was sign a 12-month contract, and then find out the place abroad sucked for whatver reason.
I wanted to teach in China, and I found they have plenty of 6-month contracts available, despite what you may hear.
If China appeals to you, go on www.anesl.com - I believe it's a Chinese-gov't sponsored website. They list many universities in China, contacts for the universities, and the details of the contracts. Just keep searching for places that offer 6-month contracts. That's how I got my job. Contact the schools directly; if you go through the website to have them contact the schools for you, it's a bureaucratic mess.
I'm just starting month 3 of a 6-month contract at a university of 25,000 in northern China. I know they need more English teachers for next semester, and would hire any native speaker. If you want a 'sure thing' with no hassles or surprises, you're always welcome to contact me. I don't know what country interests you, but I'll give you my email if you want it. Peace, Justin |
