So is it workable to be a vegetarian and teach in S. Arabia or United Arab Emirites or neighboring countries? Those who have been there, please let me know.

Dear gsmith68,
In Saudi - yes, though you'll get a lot of strange looks if you eat with the locals. A very good friend of mine spent many, many years there, most of them with his family along (also vegetarians) and they had no problems whatsoever.
Regards,
John

That's cool, I can deal with strange looks. I just want to be able to buy TOFU in the grocery store and have some vegetarian options in restaurants.

I posted a similar query earlier this year. Someone said that the Lebanon is vegetarian-friendly.

I have traveled a bit in the Middle East and was happy with what I found. However, I am now in Turkey and starving to death. The school is only now beginning to realize that a vegetarian doesn't eat chicken, and that their picking the meat out of the soup is not sufficient. Salads are getting old. Thank goddess I brought protein powder with me. No tofu to be found. sniffle sniffle whimper whimper

Thanks, dmb, for the info. I went there yesterday. I loaded up on tofu and other wonderful items .... AFTER BEING INTERVIEWED BY ISTANBUL TV. Smile They were preparing a story to be aired next Tuesday (or is it the next???) regarding the growing popularity of wholefoods. I was happy to participate, but I looked like a river rat, as it was pouring rain outside.

Take care, and thanks again!
