Mr. White - You're just being picky! Don't let the law get in the way of making money.

There are a lot of teachers who probably make a lot of money working for Hess. But as you said, the website doesn't offer a whole lot that most schools won't give. I mean with any chain school you're going to be following the law (to some degree) and you're going to be legal as well. They are just trying to make it sound like they are the only ones who do this in an effort to increase recruitment.

The fact is that kindergarten positions in Hess are pretty secure and although some foreigners have been deported for working in kindergartens I have never heard of anyone being deported from a Hess kindergarten.

That said, you are obviously aware of the kindergarten situation, so why not just work in the other programs that Hess offers and that are 100% legal?

Because a company that lies on its website is not a company I want to work for.

Well good luck in finding a company in Taiwan that does everything completely according to the letter of the law.

Actually the most ridiculous thing is the Taiwanese government's insistence on keeping foreigners out of kindergartens. Despite the demand and th fact that learning a second language at a young age has shown to improve mental development.

I interviewed at a non-Hess kindy. When I said about having to run away when the police came I was told that it wasn't necessary. I can walk.

Well thank you for your best wishes.

Irrespective of what is good for the young minds on kindergarten aged students, I prefer to be told the truth about the terms of potential employment.

Other companies may also play the loopholes to their advantage, but few claim it is 'clean', and even fewer dare put it in print.

Hess are liars and new teachers should be aware of their 'reassuring' tactics.

Dare to dream.

Mr. White, at least you are informed. I sometimes have to laugh at the people working here that do not even know that their jobs are illegal.

It's funny to me that people even ask about HESS anymore.

This thread is just another spin of the same broken record: Everyone knows that HESS is one of the worst possible schools in Taiwan. I worked there, so I know. Hardly anyone completes their year long contract, the Head Office is less than professional and the schedule is HORRIBLE (6 days a week, 9am to 9pm for a lot of people).

The only people who work at HESS are new teachers who don't know any better, or strange older teachers who don't have any other options.

It's a place for below average, mediocre people. If you view yourself as being average to above average in ability, there are a lot better opportunities.

It might be the same old, same old from Hess but you have to admit they know how to market themselves, and this is why people ask about them on sites such as this. In many respects their large number of schools, their internet presence and their use of local media - e.g. they are always sticking ads and nominating teachers of the month in the Taipei Times - so it's to be expected that people new to TEFL in Taiwan shall enquire. True, those with greater TEFL knowledge know to avoid Hess like the plague but don't knock the ability of the company to put themselves out there to the wider world. In this respect Hess probably are Taiwanese leaders. In pedagogical terms they are certainly not though.

Not to mention that Hess offers 30,000 NT start up loans. That means just about anyone could come here and work for them. You don't need to have $3000 US to buy a plane ticket and then live for two months while you wait for your first pay.

That's another good point I hadn't thought of. That's a great example of what kind of Company they really are. What kind of Company actually looks for broke people to hire!

The loan is the equivalent of the IMF and World Bank loans to African countries. They loan them the money knowing that they will then be stuck forever owing interest payments and be indebted to them for the long run.

HESS' loan is the same thing: They do it so they can force unhappy teachers to stay with them. It's like modern day indentured servitude.
Anyone who DOES have a couple thousand $$ wouldn't want to start working with HESS.

Anyway, there is so much bad press out there about HESS that it's amazing to me anyone still works there.

It's a testament to how many things today are about appearances rather than quality. They are big and they have a flashy website.... must be good!

Meanwhile, almost everyone who works there can't wait to leave.
