I recently did my Westgate phone interview and it seemed to go rather well. I honestly cannot wait to get out of Korea, at least for a semester. I am a little worried though about the state of NOVA affecting my chances of getting hired. Is this a serious possibility, is the market that flooded right now? |

I'll be returning to Japan early next year after being offered a position sometime in late September. Things are somewhat different now than when I was given a job, but it seems to me that, beyond all the personal characteristics (whether or not one has blonde hair or blue eyes, for example), there is a consideration for one's skills and qualifications. I, for one, have to think that I have more credentials (formal and otherwise) in terms of teaching English than the typical one-year teacher at NOVA just now wandering the main transit lines for another job.
So what I'm saying is your chances may have a taken a hit because of NOVA, but if you're good enough, and if you think you had a good interview, you're probably in.
If, on the other hand, everything you read on GaijinPot is true, and qualifications mean jack, then it's all a flip of the coin, and your chances haven't changed that much anyways. |

NOVA is losing teachers fast. It has 5000 on staff, but imagine having that many on the loose looking for work all at once. Since many are leaving right now, and being as this is the worst time for general hiring, you can imagine their desperation and persistence in trying to land something before the winter holiday.
Best of luck with that Westgate interview. Was it for a 3-month position or a 7-month one? Either way, you're going to have to look for a new job practically the day you arrive, but at least you'll have a visa in hand for some security. |

Why are you leaving Korea for Japan?
Frankly, if you're just an eikaiwa teacher, it seems like a really bad time to be moving to Japan for a conversation school job (NOVA crisis).
Good luck with your Westgate interview results |

I hope you didn't mention bicycles. When I applied to them three or four years ago now, my question regarding whether I could ride a bicycle to work was met with a sharp intake of breath, a sudden pause and then a rather strained, "Westgate employees are NOT permitted to use bicycles". My rejection email appeared a few days later, and even though I asked, they wouldn't tell me why.
If you didn't mention bicycles, you should be ok! |

I just got a "no" from Westgate. I am extremely disappointed. Are their positions really that competitive or am I just not cut out for Japan? It feels as much now because a few years back I was turned down by NOVA as well. For shame.
Has anyone else been accepted or rejected by Westgate recently? What is your situation? Are you living abroad in Asia, are you an ex-NOVA employee.
I am sooo bummed and sooo very tired of Korea.
funk it...

Chaz46,
Nova and Westage tend not to hire people who have too much experience and who are over 30.
I've come across many friendly, competent TEFL instructors in Japan who had applied with Nova but were rejected.
Nova hired young, pliable people who had no teaching experience and were short on life skills.
Keep pushing, you'll find something.
Korea getting you down? |

Thanks for the vote of confidence. Yeah, Korea is getting to me. I am still interested in Korea and thought that a job with Westgate would give me a much needed break but the chance to visit again in the future and do camp work... oh well. |
