I don't know if anyone's noticed, but there's a pretty dominant victim mentality in this thread. I mean, it's shrouded in passive-aggressiveness and recriminations toward the "hangers-on," and it's probably factually true, but nonetheless there are one or two posts in this thread meant to draw pity.

But that's my view of things.

I don't work for NOVA, but I know that if I did I wouldn't be going in to work at all. As I have said before, the only thing that those teachers with their wishful-thinking are doing is perpetuating the myth that NOVA is still in business. It is not.

Temujin and others are quite right for being annoyed at the teachers who persist in thinking that things will all work out right in the end and quite right to be annoyed at those who keep pushing the Sahashi line that they're only going through a rocky patch. This is beyond a joke and those making excuses for meekly showing up at their branch are not doing anyone but Sahashi any favours. This is not about loyalty as the only people they should be loyal to are their fellow teachers and the students who are no longer going along with this charade. Ultimately a lot of people are going to lose out and they will lose more the longer this drags on.

Nova is not a work option anymore. There's no more money, by now everyone can see that. For those without work options, unemployment insurance or a ticket home are all that's left. Continuing to work is just delaying UI and prolonging everyone's misery.

More likely to shutdown?! Erm, you need to go north a bit.

You're right. I don't have a 100% clear idea of the reality of the situation. You're convinced that it's all over but the waiting. You'd like everyone to walk away from the job so the situation can reach what you believe to be its inevitable conclusion as fast as possible. That may be the best thing or it may not. My point was that for those who still have some shred of hope that things will get better, walking out on the job just makes it more of an improbability and thus, won't do anything to help keep that hope alive.

However, if clear proof were to be shown that there will be no pay this week either, I would go along with the recommendation to walk out and put it all to an end.

This point may be moot as of tomorrow; there are rumours that NOVA will make a big announcement.

I'd probably be more interested in this if I hadn't see so many of the faxes and announcements previous. I really don't think it's going to say much than he's said before, "new plan, hang in there blah blah blah". I would only be surprised if he acutally came out and said it was over. More than likey, this farce continues till the end and then bunny man slinks of somewhere away from sight and probably out of country.

I still stand by my initial sympathy for the hangers on, but the majority of that is for the brand new teachers that have been sucked into this and I think are making up a large part of those still working.

Theres a general mindset among those on the internet a lot that everyone acutally digs through the net for every bit of news on everything. I never assume that just because it's on the net everyone knows it, and I don't think the majority of Nova staff kept up with the news on forums like this. More than likey they got their info second hand or from news or those stupid faxes. Of the dozens of Nova staff that got recruited with me, maybe 1 or 2 had even heard of this forum, or letsjapan or gaijinpot.

There's no UI waiting for these newcomers, nothing. Their in a foreign country, the majority don't speak much or any Japanese and thier facing a completely uncertain future. A lot of them have had dreams of coming here for years and had put a good amount of effort and resources into making that happen, and now for that to fall apart before their eyes is a hard pill to swallow. So all they have left is the sad little hope that things might turn around and they can get on with their dream.

I made friends with quite a few of the people who came over with me, and I have had to watch a number of them go. I recently helped one take their bags to the station and it was really sad as I watched them board the bus to the airport, knowing that they probably won't see Japan again for a long time. For some this was their one shot, and now it's gone.

It's easy to stand around with all the info and experience and scream about how these "drones" should know better, but it's not so easy when you actually talk to them and realise their human beings. So I'm going to keep feeling sorry for them, because I've actually met them, because in the end their people stuck in a really crappy situation that's completely out of their control.

Machines work for free, not people. Why is telling someone not to work for free treating them as anything other than people?

That's a bit too simplistic to fit reality.

But if you want something equally simplistic: talking down to people and blaming them for other people's problems without knowing or caring about their individual concerns is one way to NOT treat them as people.

I've never worked for NOVA and I never will, so I especially don't know why they're sticking around at work. Guess what? Neither do you. Neither do the teachers who have quit NOVA and neither do the teachers who want to pass blame onto the teachers still there.

Speaking of recruitment, are new teachers still being recruited? I'm curious of this because wouldn't that mean that the overseas staff are still getting paid? Or does their pay system work differently?

Most people i know are not going to work. However, i only have 2more days to work this month to make up my 11 days should the 1% chance I ever receive my unemployment, between the time it will take and whenever the ship will be declared bankrupt... i do have plans to be working elsewhere rather than hang around for the next 6mths to receive unemployment.. i'm not going to work in the vain hope that we will pull through. Mind you, voluntary work will look good on my cv.

As far as I know, recruitment has been completely forzen. I heard rumors of new people getting settled in as recent as 2 weeks ago, but I think those were people that had been signed and booked to come over months ago. No idea if the recruiters are still working, but I'd like to believe they have enough common sense not to send over any more people.

I got a new job! Had my first day today! I got damn lucky though. I probably would be buying a ticket home at the endof the month. But, now I can stay.

I still reckon my purchase of the NOVA Usagi stuffed mascot is looking like a good collectors item investment, although I have a feeling somehow NOVA will pull out of the fire and continue on in some form or another.
