I have just accepted a teaching position in Sendai city. As I have never been there, I dont know a whole lot about it. Any one who can tell me anything about the city or the prefecture would be greatly appreciated. Or perhaps, some one could just point me in the right direction. I have already visited Sendais official web page and Japans tourism web page, but I cant help but think there should be more info out there.
I would even be prepared to buy, with actual dollars if I had to, a book on Sendai. Are there any worth buying?
Thanks! |

Hey, thanks for the response.
I guess I was thinking about things like, where is the cheapest or best place to buy food. (Ill be by the Sendai train Station.) Where are the best restaurants, bars movie theaters, English bookstores, electronics stores, etc. Are there any bad neighborhoods I should look out for?
Are there any things in Sendai I absolutely must not miss? What do the locals do for fun, such as how far away are the slopes, hiking trails, etc.
Anything you can think of would be great, thanks. |

There are lots of bars and restaurants in Sendai.Which ones are the best you will have to decide. There is an excellent bookstore called Maruzen in the AER building next to the station.I tend to buy food when it is on sale so check the flyers every week.Daiei and Coop seem to be ok for shopping. It depends on what you are shopping for.
Yamaya liquor stores are great for low prices on booze and also some food.
I don't ski but Mt. Zao is a popular spot with my students.Mt. Izumigaotaki is closer but the skiing is not so great,as per my students.
Matsushima is a must see.It is the 3rd most popular spot for tourists in Japan.I think you can go by train but not sure.By car it is maybe 2 hours out of Sendai.Beautiful scenery along the Pacific coast and boat tours are available. They have oysters galore there, so enjoy.
For serious hiking I would go to Yamagata-ken.Check out Mt. Gassan and Mt. Chokai.
Hope this helps you out. |
