hello everyone.....
i am just about to finish my contract at ef, after two years...i made it to senior teacher, and they want me to continue...however, i am certain that other possibilities exist, probably with better working conditions, so i want to see what else is out there....the usual job postings seem to be all ef, and any interesting places offer low low salaries..any help in where to look and any tips would be greatly appreciated
thanks, thomas |

Depending on where you live in Jakarta, I'd go check out EEC. I worked at the Slipi branch years ago and I was happy there. Since then I've had other opportunities that worked out better for me. The DOS, Justin, is a good guy, and EEC pays more than EF, I think. They also have a branch in Bintaro and Kelapa Gading. |

It depends if you want to stay on in ESL - TBI pay about 14.5 approx per month in the central branch, less in Kelapa Gading. Or, look into a Nat.Plus school - at least 18 a month. Depends on what you want to teach........
Hope this helps. |

Untrue. Going rate this year for good NatPlus schools is around 17juta. I know some paying as little as 11. |

A lot of nat plus jobs are posted locally on www.jobsdb.com
When you go to the website click on Indonesia then in 'jobs by category' click on 'education'. This site carries jobs for Indonesian nationals as well as FT's so you have to fish around a bit. Note that except for emergencies (or incredibly high staff turnover in some schools) Nat plus schools don't generally recruit mid semester. |

Actually, I think it depends on your power of negotiation. I know 3 people all on 20+. |

Google it and a web-site can be found (forgot the name) with the adresses of most school in Jakarta. Bang out your CV, stick on a suit and go down there in person. That's what i did and i got 3 offers - but be warned, it takes time so start ASAP. Also, they usually hire from April....
Good luck. |

I know a few on that money too, usually guys who've been around Indo for a while. The figure I was quoting was a general average. Like you say, negotiate.
Still know about three people at St. Laurensia on 11 jt, though. (Someone from there annoyed me on another thread so I couldn't resist a little poke...) |

Agreed Malu. However, It's also important when negotiating to bring past experiences to the table - management etc. Also, what else can the potential employee bring? Coaching certificates, extra curricular activities etc etc. It's important to show and advertise his/her skills and experience, rather than focus on their lack, so far, of teaching experience.
Be positive, be patient and don't give up. |

we should try to be a little more careful when giving salary ranges. truth be told, they can vary greatly and this doesn't depend on the "type" of school it is ( nat plus and such). instead, it depends mostly on the budget allocation and the importance they place on the english department. my school for example currently has three local english teachers that are excellent at their job and the director knows that they are good so she can continue to pay them a very good local salary while only having to pay one "token bule" ( thats me) a western salary. still there are other schools who think that more bules means they can charge higher entrance fees and overpay the bules to entertain the kids...these types of schools tend to begin with a rapid turnover of students each year and soon a higher turnover of bule teachers as they will soon be blamed for the drop in enrollment.
heres my point.don't just go after the highest salary. make sure that the school and its expectations of you are what you want. i make less than some of my friends who have the same type of job but i also wouldn't leave this school for theirs as they spend their time bitchin to me all day about what they hate about where they work....my happiness where i am far outweighs the 2 juta less i make here |

Can I just second what Beefer said. I was getting very good pay and housing from the school that I just recently left. My happiness was worth more than the money and at the end of the day there were just too many dodgy things happening that I didn't want to be a part of. Money isn't everything |

Of course beefer and sherlock are absolutely right here. Being content is worth more than a couple of juta. If money was everything we wouldn't be in this game, now would we? |

Anyone know where to find an up-to-date list of national plus schools? The one I've found seems to be about two years old. My contract with EF ends in June, but I want to get an early start on trying to find another place of employment. Not sure what I can find with just a year of experience. I'll check out TBI, but I'm not too crazy about language mill hours. |

It never struck me that TBI was a 'language mill', esp compared to EF. I have worked with both organisations, and I felt that TBI was much more professsional.
I was impressed with the range of text books used and overall quality. Certainly no 'sausage factory'. I was never happy about EF quizzing students each semester as to how they rated their teacher. The lazy ones always complained that their lack of progress was the teacher's fault. This all went into the DOS' file.
TBI were also quite realistic in regards to health insurance (medivac to Singapore if necessary) and their salary was good.
IMHO, one of the top schools. |
